Legacy: First Details For Peter Molyneux’s Industrialist Sim

Legacy is a new industrialist sim from Fable creator Peter Molyneux.

Peter Molyneux Legacy Sim

Legendary video game designer – and notable snake oil salesman – Peter Molyneux has announced that his next game will be an industrialist sim called Legacy

In Legacy, you play an inventor looking to grow an industrial empire. To do so, you must first create a product. This part of the game sees you combine various pre-set assets in order to invent a product. There doesn’t seem to be much to this process in terms of ensuring that your product will reach a particular market. You can create a variety of items that range from simple to downright bizarre. At first, the point seems to be to just get a product out there.

From there, the game turns into more of a slightly traditional management sim. You’ll be responsible for building factories, staffing them, acquiring materials, and doing many of the things that you’d probably expect to do if you were trying to build an in-game empire. That part of the game feels fairly standard even if we’re still waiting to hear many of the details of how this section of the gameplay will work.

Where things get a little more interesting is with the reveal of the game’s morality system. It seems that Legacy will present you with several scenarios that will force you to make moral decisions. Like most of the other elements of the game, we don’t know many concrete details about this aspect of the title, but it seems that you’ll be forced to decide what kind of boss you’re going to be. On the simplest level, this seems to involve choosing the path of greed or supporting your workers. That system might add an interesting piece of social commentary to the experience.

Still, believing in Legacy requires you to believe in the legacy of Peter Molyneux. We’re well into “shame on you” territory so far as that goes. While The Trail proved to be a surprise hit for Molyneux, some of his other recent games like Godus and Curiosity have only verified his reputation as a man who tends to overpromise and underdeliver. That’s a reputation that many of those who played the enjoyable (but often disappointing) Fable series can attest to.

We’ll see if Legacy exemplifies the best of Molyneux when it releases at an unspecified time on currently unnamed platforms that will likely include PC and mobile devices.
