If you choose to stick with Fallout 76 through 2020, you’ll eventually get to interact with human NPCs in the game’s Wastelanders expansion.
This upcoming DLC will see other wanderers come into the wasteland looking for a place to call home. While the full cast of NPCs hasn’t been revealed, it seems that it will include everything from cannibals and cultists to survivors like yourself. The Wastelanders expansion will also feature brand new quests, characters, choices, and dialog trees designed to complement the fact there are now humans you can interact with. Those interactions will even benefit from new dialog trees which can affect your in-game reputation with individuals and groups.
The NPCs are certainly the stars of this particular show in terms of upcoming features. One of the most popular critiques of Fallout 76 upon its launch revolved around the game’s lack of human NPCs and how their absence made the game feel empty in comparison to the mainline Fallout games. The idea of non-playable settlers and soon populating the game’s expansive world does help sell the idea of Fallout 76 being an online Fallout experience.
We’re not really sure where the quality bar for Fallout 76 rests at the moment given the game’s incredibly disappointing launch and further embarrassments such as some potentially moldy helmets associated with the game that was sold via GameStop. The most notable update to the game since its launch has been a battle royale mode which kind of just came and went.
Of course, a battle royale mode was always a bit desperate considering that Bethesda had to previously deny that Fallout 76 would be a battle royale game, but let’s not pretend that was Fallout 76‘s lowest moment. Here’s hoping Wastelanders can help turn things around for those who have stuck with the game.
