Link Tank: Discover Luzzu, Malta’s Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film
Witness Malta's beautiful foreign film before awards season, why fans are mad at Nintendo, the first Cowboy Bebop full trailer, and more in Link Tank!
The life of a fisherman in Malta isn’t all it cracks up to be, and sometimes you’re willing to go to extreme lengths to provide for your family. All of this can be seen and more in Luzzu, Malta’s award-winning foreign language film.
“A hardworking Maltese fisherman, Jesmark is faced with an agonizing choice. He can repair his leaky luzzu – a traditional, multicolored wooden fishing boat – in the hopes of eking out a meager living at sea for his wife and newborn son, just as his father and grandfather did before him. Or he can decommission it in exchange for an EU payout and cast his lot with a sinister black-market operation that is decimating the Mediterranean fish population and the livelihoods of the local families who depend on it.”
With Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves already under his belt, Zack Snyder has plans to expand his zombified world into its own cinematic universe.
“Still riding the high of his Justice League director’s cut, released on HBO Max earlier this year after a massive fan-led movement, Snyder is already laser-focused on his next cinematic universe. Released in May, Army of the Dead kick-started the Snyderverse 2.0 while taking inspiration from iconic genre films and, surprisingly, classic opera.”
Brendan Fraser’s career renaissance continues! The Doom Patrol star has landed another DC villain role as Firefly in the Batgirl movie.
“Fraser joins Leslie Grace (In The Heights), who will be playing Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham police commissioner Jim Gordon. J.K. Simmons (who previously appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League) will be reprising his role as Gordon. Batgirl is directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life) with a script from Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey).”
The first full-length trailer for Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop is here, and it’s glorious.
“If you don’t have any attachment to the original Cowboy Bebop anime series, I very much suspect this looks like a fun, sci-fi series where John Cho has a funny hairdo and chases bounties across the solar system with his friend and the woman he occasionally wants to kill. Also, there’s a fun soundtrack and an adorable corgi.”
Wandavision, Bobs Burgers, and more of the best Halloween-themed episodes from 21st-century television.
“The Halloween TV episode has been around for decades, ever since the days of ‘It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ in 1966. It’s heartening to see that, even in today’s streaming times, some series are still embracing the seasonal tradition. Over the past several years of the new(ish) century, we’ve seen some impressive additions to this spooky canon, so below is our list of the 25 greatest Halloween episodes of the 21st century.”
Nintendo added a bunch of 64 games to the Switch through online use, but players are fed up with how glitchy the system is.
“Nintendo 64 games finally became officially playable on Nintendo Switch Online last night and they run…less than stellar. Almost immediately, social media started filling up with examples of technical shortcomings, emulation woes, and button layouts that prove there is no god. It once again calls into question what exactly people are getting in exchange for Switch Online’s new premium price tier.”
