Amazon is moving forward with a second season of 1970s-set Nazi-stalking series Hunters.

Hunters Season 2 is set to continue the titular team’s Nazi-wasting ways.

Amazon Studios officially made the order for a second season of the campy, alt-universe, ultraviolent crime thriller series, Hunters, stopping short of setting any production or Amazon Prime Video release windows, obviously due to the intrinsic uncertainty of the COVID era. However, the second season renewal announcement was posted with an accompanying teaser trailer bearing the era-appropriate imagery of a spinning Season 2 logo-brandishing vinyl record before building to the opening bass line of a show-familiar tune in Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer.”

The series was created and written by David Weil, who was inspired by his own grandmother’s harrowing stories as a Holocaust survivor. Weil was also co-showrunner for Season 1 alongside executive producer Nikki Toscano. Yet, the creative team is boosted by the prominent presence of Jordan Peele, who serves as an executive producer on the series, bringing genre gravitas from directorial efforts Get Out and Us, and as creator/writer of CBS All Access’s The Twilight Zone reboot series, for which Weil actually supplied the story concept of the recently-dropped Season 2 episode, “Ovation.” As Weil lauds of the renewal in a statement, showing gratitude to Amazon and Studio Head Jennifer Salke:

“I am beyond grateful to Jen and the Amazon family for their continued extraordinary support of Hunters. Alongside our magnificent cast, incredible crew, and brilliant writers and producers, I am more eager than ever to share the next chapter of the Hunters saga with the world.”

Hunters, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video back on February 21, was heralded with the headlining presence of the legendary Al Pacino. Yet, its main draw has been a retro-exploitation sensibility with the occasional interjection of hard drama, complementing a wild premise focused on a diverse group of New Yorkers in 1977 violently making prey of hidden-in-plain-sight Third Reich alumni in the United States. The series centers on young protagonist Jonah Heidelbaum (Logan Lerman), who, upon the death of his beloved Aunt Ruth (Jeannie Berlin), learns of his own familial legacy tied to the Hunters, encouraged by its leader, Meyer Offerman (Pacino). The cast also consists of Josh Radnor, Kate Mulvany, Carol Kane, Saul Rubinek, Tiffany Boone, Greg Austin, Louis Ozawa, Lena Olin and Dylan Baker.

As Amazon’s Salke chimes in on the renewal:

“With Hunters, David Weil’s bold vision and fearless imagination powered a thrilling, twisty, action-packed first season that engaged Prime Video customers around the world. We are thrilled that David, Jordan and the Hunters will be back with us for more.”

However, viewers were left with key questions pertaining to the “more” that Amazon and the show’s creative coalition will eventually conjure. That’s because February’s inaugural season concluded with a colossal plot twist (which you can read about right here if you don’t mind spoilers,) that not only provided an appropriate season-ending cliffhanger, but essentially redefined the context of everything that occurred throughout the entire series in multiple ways. Thus, it will be interesting to see how a prospectively game-changed Hunters Season 2 ultimately manifests.

Hunters Season 2 Release Date

Hunters Season 2 doesn’t have a release date planned for Amazon Prime Video just yet. Moreover, given the fact that most U.S. productions are still COVID-locked as of this August writing, it seems very unlikely that the second season will arrive by any point in 2021. Thus, viewers should probably set their expectations for sometime in 2022.
