BBC to screen final filmed episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures

Simon Brew

As the BBC confirms it won't be continuing with the show, it's been revealed that the final, completed episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures are to be screened.

If you're anything like us, you're still struggling with the shock and unfairness of the death of Elisabeth Sladen last month. Tributes poured in for the late, great actress from people of all ages, and it's clear that she's left behind a mass of appreciative fans. Us included. May she rest in peace.

As expected, her untimely death means that the BBC has no plans now to film further episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures. But it has now confirmed that it will screen the episodes that were already shot. The BBC statement reads:

"Contrary to press reports today we can confirm that no new episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures will be filmed following the tragic death of actress Elisabeth Sladen in April, 2011. As a tribute to Elisabeth the six episodes that were recorded with her last year will be broadcast on CBBC at a date to be confirmed."

Once we have that transmission date, we'll be sure to let you know. Our thoughts remain with Elisabeth Sladen's family.

I hope they will do something with the world they have created with SJA. There is no reason why they couldn't do a new spin off with the kids, maybe even with another old companion taking up the mantle, or even better a new character!

It did occur to me that they could continue the series - maybe with Katy Manning as Jo Grant in the lead ? But of course just clutching at straws really. It was Liz's show, and I don't think it could continue without her.

I'm as glad as I can be given the horrible circumstances that we will get to see the 3 stories, still can't really believe that she has gone... and watching the last episode of season 4, which was called `Goodbye Sarah Jane' it featured a scene where Mr Smith has to tell SJ that she is `dreadfully ill' and she may well have known then she was actually sick, horrible. But glad the BBC will show these, quite right

I'm afraid I'll find those episodes painful to watch.

I've always liked the 'three show franchise' aspect of the Whoniverse, but it looks like that'll all end this year. Unless... The Adventures of River Song, anyone? Not a kids show (obviously), post-watershed, but not quite Torchwood.

I would like to see some sort of continuation of the show. I think it's truly one of the most creative programs on television right now aimed at a young audience. The other cast members, Daniel Anthony, Tommy Knight and Anjli Mohindra have proven themselves wonderful actors and would be perfectly capable of carrying a revamped program. I certainly like the idea of Katy Manning stepping in as Jo Grant. The program could be presented as the characters being determined to carry on the work of Sarah-Jane. After all, those aliens from outer space are going to be taking advantage of the loss of Sarah-Jane and will be invading left and right! Another possible choice of actress would be Sophie Aldred as Ace. Regardless, the children in the viewing audience following "The Sarah-Jane Adventures" deserve a program just as creative to continue in SJA's place.

I'd love to see Ace picking up the kid friendly Who baton. She could be a little cooler and more action orientated, teaching kids neat skills and smarts. Not that SJS didn't but Ace would be like a cool Aunt as opposed to a cool Mum. And to lose Nicholas Courtney AND Elizabeth Sladen in the same year is just heartbreaking to say the least. :(

Personally, I think it's the right thing to do. Let the completed work be shown but they don't need to film any new ones, and I'd prefer they didn't do more SJA or even a different spinoff (it'd feel a bit too obvious, much as I'd like to see Jo or Ace return).

Maybe, but I'd also like to see a more final end to the series. Perhaps different characters from throughout SJA and DW turn up at the wake to explain how Sarah Jane touched all their lives?

It would be nice to see another companion take over the reins but I imagine it would be far too much of a stepping into dead woman's shoes to make that feel comfortable for any of them.

would be lovely and a real tribute if they could film and edit something into the main DW show to see the Doctor learn that Sarah Jane had died, him receiving a call from Luke or Mr Smith, which in reality is what would happen.

I think we need to remember that Sarah Jane isn't dead. The episodes will air and instead of us seeing the 4th story we just won't. There doesn't need to be an ending or closure for the show because Sarah Jane will keep doing what she's doing but we just won't see it. It's bad enough that Elisabeth is dead without killing off Sarah Jane as well.Kids don't need a double loss. The loss of the show and Lis' commentaries on DVDs is bad enough. Let Sarah Jane live on in our imaginations. I really don't agree that someone else should do the show either. It was Elisabeth's show and she's irreplaceable.
