Doctor Who: what is the Osterhagen Key?

Simon Brew

A plot device inserted into the midst of The Stolen Earth, we take a look at what the Osterhagen Key in Doctor Who could be about to do...

Published on Jul 1, 2008

When Martha was handed the Osterhagen Key in the last episode of Doctor Who, The Stolen Earth, we were left in no uncertainty that this was something not to be used at all costs. There were worried faces, stern warnings, and people who didn’t know a thing about it.

But what on earth is it?

Good question, and it’s one that we’ll try and unravel a little here. We should point out that we have no inside knowledge, nor have we sought out spoilers to try and answer the mystery. This is all speculation of ourselves and Den Of Geek readers…

The most obvious place to start is with an anagram. Osterhagen itself can be rearranged to form the words ‘Earth’s Gone’. So does the key bring it back? Or is it the kind of key that you use, as we suspect, as a very last resort once the fate of the world looks doomed? It wouldn’t surprise us if it proved to be a suicide device of sorts for whoever chose to use it, for use when the future of the planet looks doomed. Which, to be fair, it does.

If that’s the case, then what does the key actually do? Does it unlock something? The only lock that we’ve had mentioned in the last episode or so was the timelock on the Time War, that somehow Dalek Caan managed to navigate to bring back Davros, albeit at the cost of his mind. Could the key unlock the Time War, and just what would that open up? Would it mean the Time Lords return? Would it mean whoever used the key lost their mind in the same way that Dalek Caan has?

What hurts this theory is that UNIT, rather than Torchwood, have been holding the key. Who gave it to them, because it’s unlikely they invented the technology themselves? Could it be the Doctor? River Song?

So could it move the Earth? As was noted in The Stolen Earth, this has been done before, and it’s just been done again. Could the key be what’s needed to move the planet back, or would that be too easy?

Several people have reported that if you search for the Osterhagen Key online, you firstly get, er, a whole lot of websites speculating what it is. But what you also find is references to Burning Man (although we had no joy when we went searching). That could link back to The Master at the end of season three, but there may be a little grasping at straws there.

What’s interesting, incidentally, is that Harriet Jones was very keen for the key not to be used. Having rewatched The Stolen Earth, we get a very obvious shot of the Dalek re-aiming before appearing to shoot Harriet. We strongly suspect that we’ve not seen the last of her, though, and that she’s aligned herself somehow (by choice or otherwise) with the Daleks. Thus, the Dalek re-aiming was potentially to shoot the computer and screen rather than Harriet Jones herself.

If that is the case, then she knows the impact that the key can have: does that mean it’s the ultimate weapon against what’s been planned? Or, as Prime Minister, was she something to do with acquiring it in the first place through her alien encounters?

Further theories? There’s the ongoing fear that it’s the dreaded reset switch. Surely they’re not going to use it to wind time back again or something like that? After last year, we suspect that won’t be the case this time round, but you wouldn’t totally wager against it.

Could it perhaps be a means to reopen a rift? Or is that rewinding to the end of series two?

And if you want something a little more outlandish, could it be some kind of ‘backup’ of the Doctor himself? He’s the person most likely to have given it to UNIT, after all, as we've already speculated.

All of which leaves us, well, precisely no further, short of a feeling that the aforementioned key is a crucial part of the Journey’s End mystery. Share your own theories in the comments box below…

If Harriet is working for the daleks then the key could be something designed specifically to deal with them. Although that has shades of The Hand of Omega in Rememberance of the Daleks so I doubt it somhow. RTD usually manages to come up with something pretty good so whatever happens will be worth waiting for.

Osterghagen: A town in Germany, that was part of the Buchenwald concentration camp complex. Davros and the Daleks are based on Hitler and the Nazis. Oster: German word for Easter. So rebirth /resurrection meaning? Perhaps this links to the crucible that the Daleks mention a couple of times - the Red Dalek says they have long awaited the crucible's completion, which seems their ultimate aim. Maybe the key turns it off or on?

Maybe it will 'unlock' the time war, meaning that the Time Lords could return

RTD posed the question at the start of the series in his Radio Times Season preview, 'What lies in the Vault?'. Presumably that's what the key's for.

Someone sat down and figured out anagrams for Osterhagen? Bless you people, you are as nuts as I am. That's why I feel at home in the Den of Geek.

all the theories I've heard agree that the Dalek shot the camera instead of Harriet Jones, former PM (who everyone knows). They all also agree that she may be working for the Daleks... Maybe she has been kidnapped by the Daleks, and they shot the screen to make the other subwave "members" believe Harriet is dead. The Daleks may use Harriet against the Doctor, as a moral dilemma. After all, we all saw the Christmas special in 2006, where the Doctor made his disgust of her clear. So if he faced "surrender or the female will be Exterrrrminated". Admittedly, she is only one human, and the Earth can live without her. But this IS the Doctor, so you never know. The Osterhagen key, at the moment, is THE most annoying thing in the world... Coz we don't know what it is... Where did UNIT get it from? Does it fit a lock, or does it fit a computer slot? What's on it is it IS a computer attachment... I can't wait to find out

The Osterhagen Key imho is the Black Hole Converter that the master mentioned in season 3. Its basically the key that he had in the watch that would activate. "Black Hole Converter inside every ship, if I cant have this world, Doctor, than neither can you." I think that someone this is in relation to the sarah jane adventures and swedish~scientist that found a way to "create" a blackhole that K-9 is currently closing up. BUUUUUTTT.... I look forwards to saturday to answer my questions for me :-)

Harriet seems far to loyal to the human (noted from previous episodes) to give in to the Daleks and if it brings back the time lords why are they so afraid, surly if 1 human dies to return a world of more powerful beings that could help protect us then why the panic. to me it looks like a piece of technology, perhaps the humans made it but far in the future to protect them against the Daleks then, using it now would change the whole future of the human race. it would explain UNIT having it, why those in power know of it, why it has been kept so secret, why they are thinking about using it, I could go on and on but I wont how they got it is a mystery to me though, it would have to be something to do with the dr once again all speculation

just another thought, it might have something to do with donna, all the way through the series she has being told she is "special" from rose, the Dr, the susay (or however you spell it) in the last episode. it only makes sense to round that off in the last ep she clearly has a big future in the show and so does the key

Just a thought, didn't the Face of Boe say that the doctor isn't alone, or something of the like, when he died? either way he implied that there were more time lords. This was an obvious reference to the Master coming back at the end of the season. But... If the Osterhagen key does allow for time-locked events to become events that are in flux, and can have the potential to allow time lords to come back (sane or not), could the Face be referring to this? After all Capt. Jack is there (on the stolen earth) and so he would know what is going on and whether there are more or not and when the key does (after the series ends) and then he turns into the Big Face and dies, he could tell the Doctor this in NNY, so maybe it's a reference to the Timelords that died in the Time War coming back? Or maybe, I'm going insane and can't wait for this saturday. My friends and I have ended up screaming at each other about what is going to happen and what everything means and what is relevant. It's a love-hate relationship with RTD's cliffhangers.

Well... 1) It seems obvious that the key, whatever it is, is something more terrible than the Daleks since both Captain Jack and Harriet Jones doesn't want it being used. And if the American Army Officer wants it used, it can't be good ; ). 2) It looks decidedly low tech for it to be of Dalek origin or from the future. 3) Chances are that whatever it is, it's going to be used at the very last minute, it's going to cause problems for the Doctor, and in the end he'll be all grumpy faced about the whole thing. 4) Damn it, it's all just speculation and wishful thinking. The traditional pass time of geeks everywhere. But hey, just one more day and we'll find out.

I don't see anyone making reference to the last comment by Chipo Cheng (fortune teller) in 'Turn Left'... To Donna, "What will you become?" Could the key and this comment be related?
