The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 3 finale review

The third series of the Doctor Who spin-off comes to an end with the return of a familiar foe.

PLEASE NOTE: This review includes SPOILERS

The population of the UK were feeling mighty generous on Friday as the BBC screened their annual telethon, Children In Need, but any charitable thoughts felt by this reviewer could not be extended to the final two-parter in this year's series of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

It was a stinker.

The Gift saw the return of the Slitheen but it also saw the rare return of the 'clunker' for Sarah Jane and the gang. We've had three series worth excellent stories with only the odd duffer in there. And like last year's finale, this one fails to entertain. In fact, it serves only to annoy.

I've nothing against the inhabitants of Raxicoricofallapatorius and have enjoyed their outings in both The Sarah Jane Adventures and Doctor Who but The Gift is another retread of a revisiting of the Slitheen and their naughty ways. Though this time we get introduced their relatives, the Blathereen, who are a ghastly shade of orange as opposed to the more familiar green.

At first we're meant to think the Blathereen (voiced by Simon Callow and Miriam Margolyes) are benevolent but, as SJ & Co. suspect, something is rotten in the borough of Ealing. And that something is the titular gift left by the aliens - a plant known as the Rackweed.

The first part of the finale was painfully paced with interest lacking throughout - having a meal with two of the blighters does not an episode make. Sadly, the second part proved to be no more fruitful with some dire camera work thrown in for good measure. It's a pity really because the cast deserve better and this series has seen some stout work from Lis Sladen, Tommy Knight, Daniel Anthony and Anjli Mohindra. To go out like this does not do them any kind of service.

But it wasn't all bad...

Old-school Who fans may have pricked their ears hearing Perivale and it was a nice touch to have Ace's home mentioned in the same breath as Donna Noble's Chiswick. There was also a nod to another clunker, the Peter Davison atrocity Warriors Of The Deep. After the Blathereen had "farted themselves to death" (Clyde's words not mine), Sarah Jane commented, a la The Fifth Doctor, "there should have been another way".

That's exactly what I was thinking, after such a good series with rip-roaring stories and tip-top production values - there should have been another way.

I love Sarah Jane adventures, because my kids love it, of course, not because I loved Sarah Jane as a kid. Ok I love Sarah Jane and my kids watch it to humour me. I like Clyde and Luke but especially Rani. She has that curious open minded sort of surprised look on her face at all the right moments. She's brilliant. Can't wait for the next ones ......... I mean my kids can't wait. Ps. The signature tune needs work.

I loved this finale. I really did. but then my induction to Doctor Who was through the new series (since plundered the classic series, though) so i have no aversion to the Slitheen one jot - they are wonderfully eccentric villains and work incredibly well in SJA. The finale was, perhaps, not incredibly pacey, but it made up for that in wit, fun & some excellent character development for Rani & Clyde. I think the review has a false expectation as to what SJA's is - it's not meant to be a doctor lite series or delve into cerebrally challenging & convoluted plots - its main audience is something like 8 - 14 year olds.

No harm to the reviewer but it's a kids show and you are reviewing as if it's an ep of Doctor Who. My kids loved it so as far as I am concerned it gets full marks for that. You did exactly the same with Transformers two, marking it down because you as a bunch of adults didn't like it but again my kids ab loved it. I even notice you gave a less than sparkling review on the DVD release. In reviews sometimes you should perhaps consider the target audience. I have to as my kids sit watching the ep for the fifth time. Urg.

Well, I liked it too. So I suppose I could understand it if kids loved it. It was a delight seeing our beloved Sarah-Jane getting slimed (or slitheened) along with the others this time. K9 and Mr. Smith go at it like the 2nd Doctor and the 3rd Doctor. Great stuff! Having said that, I'll curb my enthusiasm at this point and say that I'm pretty much all slitheened-out. Perhaps they could be given a rest now. Although, I do wonder what will become of that Slitheen ship sitting in the antarctic. One last remark: Anjli Mohindra is absolutely marvelous! I would love to see her take up residence in a certain TARDIS alongside a certain 11th incarnation if the chance presents itself.

The Slitheen were barely entertaining in Doctor Who, why anyone thought they would serve one repreive on this show let alone two is beyond me.

Just for clarification purposes, I have discovered that TSJA were and are based on the ITV series from the mid 1970's called The Tomorrow People. Watch series 3 of The Tomorrow People and then you will clearly see the basic premises of TSJA. You read it here FIRST OK! FROM JOHN CRICHTON.....
