TNT‘s The Alienist was one of the best TV shows of 2018. An adaptation of Caleb Carr’s crime novel of the same name, the first season followed Daniel Brühl‘s psychologist protagonist Laszlo Kreizler as he investigated an ongoing string of child murders in New York City circa 1896 with the help of Luke Evans‘ illustrator character John Schuyler Moore and Dakota Fanning‘s police secretary character Sara Moore.

In August of 2018, TNT announced they would be making a second season of the drama, based on Carr’s second novel in the series: The Angel of Darkness, meaning The Alienist season 2 is now called The Alienist: Angel of Darkness. Additionally, House of Cards‘ Frank Pugliese is onboard as the showrunner for the second season.

It’s been a long wait but the show is now almost here. Here’s everything else we know.

The Alienist: Angel of Darkness Release Date

The Alienist: Angel of Darkness will premiere on Sunday, July 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, with two episodes set to air back-to-back. The series will continue airing back-to-back episodes in the time slot, and will finish out the 8-episode season on August 9.

Along with the release date comes the first Alienist: Angel of Darkness trailer. There’s so much going on here that it almost makes up for the nearly two-year wait.

The Alienist: Angel of Darkness Cast

The main cast will return for The Alienist season 2, aka Angel of Darkness. This includes the aformentioned Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning. It will also include Douglas Smith as Marcus Isaacson, Matthew Shear as Lucius Isaacson, Robert Ray Wisdom as Cyrus, and Ted Levine as former NYPD Police Commissioner Thomas Byrnes. There’s no word yet on the inclusion of season 1’s Brian Geraghty as Theodore Roosevelt or Matt Lintz as Stevie Taggert.

New cast members include Melanie Field and Rosy McEwen in undisclosed roles. This addition of a few more female characters should be helpful, especially following the disappointing death of Q’orianka Kilcher’s Mary Palmer in Season 1.

The Angel of Darkness novel includes the addition of some more historic figures, including lawyer Clarence Darrow, women’s rights leader Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and painter Albert Pinkham Ryder.

The Alienist: Angel of Darkness Story

Per TNT:

In The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, Sara has opened her own private detective agency and is leading the charge on a brand-new case. She reunites with Dr. Kreizler, the formidable alienist, and John Moore, now a New York Times reporter, to find Ana Linares, the kidnapped infant daughter of the Spanish Consular. Their investigation leads them down a sinister path of murder and deceit, heading towards a dangerous and elusive killer. As in The Alienist, the series shines a light on the provocative issues of the era – the corruption of institutions, income inequality, yellow press sensationalism, and the role of women in society – themes that still resonate today.

This dovetails with the events of the book which is set in 1897, one year following the events of The Alienist, with Sara Moore, now a private detective (yes, Sara!) seeking out Laszlo’s help in finding the kidnapped infant daughter of a visiting Spanish dignitary.
