Sex Education Season 3 Confirmed by Netflix

Netflix's Sex Education Season 3 was confirmed by the streaming giant less than a month after Season 2 arrived.

Sex Education is officially scheduled for a third seasonal semester on Netflix!

The caustic Netflix comedy focused on levity-laced adolescent libidinousness – a production of U.K. company Eleven Films – has quietly established itself as a breath of fresh air, and has enjoyed widespread critical acclaim, thus making the renewal for Sex Education Season 3 – less than a month after the January 17 release of Season 2 – unsurprising but nevertheless welcome news.

Netflix made the third season renewal announcement with a tracking-shot-centric promo in which cast member Alistair Petrie (Principal Groff) – seemingly tapped into a Rod Serling/Night Gallery mode – walks through a Moordale High art exhibition filled with framed portraits of Sex Education’s primary players such as Otis (Asa Butterfield), Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), Lily (Tanya Reynolds) and resident therapeutic matriarch Dr. Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson), teasing their respective fates for Season 3 – in doing so, confirming said season.

Sex Education centers on the exploits of U.K. teen Otis Milburn (Butterfield), who, by way of osmosis through his sex therapist mother, Jean (Anderson), happens to possess a wealth of knowledge in things of erotic nature, despite his own personal awkwardness in that department. Thus, in keeping with the maxim, “those who can’t do, teach,” Season 1 saw Otis put his unconventional learnedness to use by teaming with his secret crush, a misfit named Maeve (Emma Mackey), to hold secret sex therapy sessions to help his romantically-vexed high school classmates.

Of course, the initial tenure of Otis’s makeshift clinic didn’t last long, and by the end of the inaugural season, yielded serious consequences for him, his best friend Eric (Gatwa) and Maeve, leaving their entire circle of friends scattered. Season 2, however, showcased a reunification process with the added presence of new cast members such as Isaac (George Robinson), a wheelchair-bound neighbor of Maeve, to whom he’s become a romantic prospect in direct competition with a lovelorn Otis.

The series has been groundbreaking for creator Laurie Nunn, an English playwright, who came into it having fielded short films such as Pregnant Pause, Radiance and Gone to Earth. Indeed, the ongoing success of Sex Education is opening doors for Nunn, who’s already attached to her first feature film, a drama called The Summer House, with a burgeoning director in Chris Foggin (Fisherman’s Friends, Kids in Love).

Sex Education Season 3 Release Date

Sex Education Season 3 doesn’t have a release date as of yet. However, the two existing seasons of the series have dropped in January of their respective years (2019 and 2020), so if there is a pattern to discern for its release strategy, then our strong speculative guess is that the third season will drop around January 2021.
