Marvel’s WandaVision Finally Unveils Comics Accurate Scarlet Witch Costume

We'll finally get to see Wanda in a version of the Marvel Comics Scarlet Witch costume on WandaVision.

Let’s face it. Wanda Maximoff hasn’t really had the best of luck in the costume department in the pages of Marvel Comics, right? She’s always had that awkward headgear, her Scarlet Witch codename kinda limits her color choices, and then there’s the fact that her costumes seemed to get more and more revealing as the years went on. Never mind the fact that she’s powerful enough to alter the fabric of reality, you’d think maybe she would have addressed this a little sooner. But WandaVision, the new Vision and Scarlet Witch-centric MCU TV series coming to Disney+, has found a creative way to pay homage to Wanda’s comic book roots.

The first footage from WandaVision was unveiled as part of Disney+ commercial for all of the streaming service’s MCU TV shows. If you haven’t seen the teaser yet, which also includes the first footage from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Loki, you can check it out here:

In the midst of its rapid fire looks at how WandaVision will pay tribute to classic sitcoms of the past, you can also very quickly spot Elizabeth Olsen wearing what appears to be a comics accurate Scarlet Witch costume. It’s quick, and we can’t draw too many conclusions from it, but it does seem like the kind of thing that will probably be a lighthearted moment, maybe something from whatever the “Halloween episode” of the imaginary sitcom of the moment is.

It’s a pretty serious departure from Wanda’s usual MCU looks, which have been far more practical in nature in her appearances in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. And Marvel Studios has a history of playing gently with the original comic book looks of their heroes and villains. Captain America: The First Avenger saw Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers don a perfectly comic book accurate Captain America costume during his days as an entertainer and propaganda figure raising money for the war effort, for example, before getting something a little more combat ready and practical for the rest of the movie (and a few more looks in future films).

In any case, all that WandaVision footage is pretty cryptic, and the official synopsis from Marvel Studios doesn’t give us much else to go on…

“Marvel Studios’ WandaVision blends the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany)—two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.”

That’s all we’ve got for now. WandaVision will arrive on Disney+ at some point in 2020. Every episode of the show is directed by Matt Shakman, with Jac Schaeffer serving as head writer.
