DuckTales Season 2 Episode 23

Let’s call this DuckTales episode ‘The Trial of Louie Duck’ since it shines a light on all of Louie’s flaws. His laziness, his pursuit of wealth, his schemes, and most importantly? His tendency to avoid the consequences of his actions. Last episode Louie did everything he could not to get out of being grounded and it ended up with him as the richest duck in the world. It’s no wonder he went overboard as the new CEO, he’s been validated for everything he’s done.

DuckTales has had many of its characters confront themselves and learn powerful lessons but none have felt like this one. This episode pushes Louie right to the edge of what makes him who he is… and then he tumbles over. Everything in the plot tore down his flaws and revealed that he has to start addressing them.

The hundred million dollar ottoman sends him flying out of the plane. His beloved Pep hurled at him in a truck. His massive spending sends a monster after him. Not even a scheme can get him out of this. It’s all funny in the most DuckTales of ways and it brings Louie to his lowest point. Whereas Glomgold and Scrooge both can’t stop in their pursuit of wealth, Louie is able to look at his actions and realize it isn’t all its cracked up to be.

In perhaps the biggest moment of character development in DuckTales yet, Louie shows humility and admits he can’t do this. He can’t be the richest duck in the world. He can’t scheme his way out of this. He has to take responsibility and own up to his mistakes. As Scrooge tells him, that makes better than even he’s ever been. Louie is finally able to break this cycle that Scrooge had started and is able to see money isn’t everything (and finally stop the monster.)

The metaphor of Scrooge previously trapping that monster is perfect. He tried to shove his own guilt and responsibility away but it eventually it got out to wreck havoc on his family. At least he was willing to take the responsibility back on but has he learned his lesson yet? Will he keep trying to be the richest duck, especially to spite Glomgold?

Whatever the case, Louie’s character arc (for now) has come to a satisfying conclusion and I can’t wait to see what they do with him next. He can go in any direction now and I wonder if the series will have him scheme for good. Perhaps we’ll see some of that in the finale, if we aren’t too busy dealing with an invasion.

So yeah, an invasion is coming! It was a great little B plot to have Della avoid the idea that Penumbra wasn’t really her friend. It had some of the most solid jokes in the episode, especially about the staring contest. In the best DuckTales way it was both hilarious and really sad when you dug deep into it. Like Louie, Della has to realize that maybe her carefree attitude isn’t always the best thing and she has to face reality more.

Well, next episode she won’t have a choice. We can’t wait!

Also, Dewey dabbed and it was flawless.
