DuckTales Episode 10 Review: The Spear of Selene!

DuckTales Episode 10

DuckTales has been gone too long. I know it’s because the series has now switched from airing on Disney XD to Disney Channel proper but how could we be denied this amazing of a series for so long?

Whether intended or not this episode picks right back up with the most important plot element that’s been woven through the early episodes, the mystery of Della. We return to the now regular pair of Dewey and Webby following up on the last clue they got about her and this is where the episode really shined. 

The antics in the various rooms were all hilarious, especially with the sea monster, but like the best DuckTales episodes it dovetailed perfectly with a more emotionally striking climax. Dewey was afraid that his mom was a bad person. It’s pretty heavy, especially coming from the usually cocksure Dewey, but it hits home. 

He’s built up this image of Della in his head as being perfect. The exact person he’d like to be. To have that all threatened is too much and wanting to protect himself from it is understandable. I actually would have been fine with him letting that vault door close. It would been a great bit of emotional territory to explore but what we got means DuckTales won’t be spinning its wheels with this leg of the Della mystery. 

Sure, Dewey may not have gotten what he wanted but he at least got to learn a little more about his mom. There are still secrets to be told and I hope she wasn’t a perfect person (anyone else getting vibes of Steven Universe here?) because that would be too easy. I want her back-story to be messy and not all fun adventures. She made mistakes but that doesn’t make her a bad person, as Dewey fears.

Seeing Dewey be so emotionally vulnerable was incredibly touching. Especially with everything going on in our world with toxic masculinity it brings a tear to my eye that little boys will be watching this and see that it’s okay to be sad. 

The Zeus/Storkules plot was fun, and it seems like it was used as a counterpoint to the heavier Dewey scenes, but ultimately was a little lacking. Don’t get me wrong, there were still some amazing jokes and Storkules is a great new character but it felt a little all over the place with Scrooge’s “rivalry” with Zeus and Huey/Louie involved in the competition. 

I can appreciate DuckTales trying to give everyone something to do but a little breathing room would have helped. Still, Donald’s confession about Della was nicely handled and using Launchpad as a comedic bookend for any episode is gold.

Does that ending mean we’re in for a two parter? It seemed like we were done with Zeus/Storkules for now but I’m always down for some time to expand on whatever location they’re in.

DuckTales is back for the foreseeable future and we are all the better for it. Woo-oo!
