Billie Eilish to Perform at Oscars 2020

Billie Eilish is having a banner year for someone just barely old enough to vote. After seeing her debut studio album When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? go double platinum with more than 2.4 million domestic copies sold, the new pop sensation won five Grammys Sunday night, making her the first woman to sweep that award ceremony’s four biggest categories, including Album of the Year. Thus operating on the logic that one major awards coup should dovetail into another, Eilish has agreed to appear during next month’s Oscars telecast.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the news itself late Wednesday evening when it was revealed Eilish will be providing “a special performance” from the Dolby Theatre on Oscar’s big night come Feb. 9. It is unclear if this special performance will be related to any specific part of the Academy Awards ceremony, such as possibly the “in memoriam” section, but it is clearly another remarkable feather in Eilish’s cap after her success in both music and film.

Indeed, before her historic Grammy wins, it was announced by Eon Productions that Eilish would be singing the new title song of the next James Bond movie, No Time to Die. Co-writing the song along with her brother and perennial collaborator, Finneas, the gig has also brought her into collaboration with legendary, and Oscar winning, composer Hans Zimmer.

Eilish talked about being a fan of the franchise when she previously spoke with ALT 98.7 FM.

“That was a while ago,” Eilish said. “It’s something me and my brother, who is my writing partner, we’ve tried to write a Bond song for our whole lives. Not even like we want to get the Bond song, just like every song that’s been the opening credit of the movies. It’s just like always been fantastic. And Bond is so dope! Like it really is, it’s the coolest movie franchise in the world. So it was a crazy call and a crazy last couple of months, and working on it with Hans. Oh my God, it was amazing. I’m very excited.”

Finneas later elaborated to Billboard that they have apparently seen the movie. Said the songwriter, “All I will say is that I think the movie’s incredible, and I’m so excited for people to hear the song that we made.”

So from 007 to the 92nd Academy Awards, Eilish is having a very busy spring at the movies, which just so happens coincide with the kickoff her world tour in March. And who knows she might be up for an Oscar herself thanks to Bond come 2021?

The Oscars meanwhile will air, sans host, on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 8pm ET.
