Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut is “An Entirely Different Film”

Scream Factory reveals the full range of special features on the long-awaited Nightbreed: The Director's Cut Blu-ray.

Oh, boy. That long awaited Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut set that’s coming from Scream Factory on October 28th is loaded. It’s even more loaded than we expected. Hell, it’s more loaded than I’m likely to be on Halloween night. They’re promising “an entirely different film.” This is bold.

Here’s a statement from Clive Barker’s office:

The Nightbreed Director’s Cut is an entirely different film than the one which was released in theaters. Its 20 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, but it contains over 40 minutes of new and altered footage. Clive oversaw the reconstruction and edit himself, personally ensuring that, at long last, he was able to tell the story he always wanted to tell, but until now, had never been given the chance. Once the scenes were reordered, and the original film footage restored, the entire film received a brand new sound mix and color pass. It is, in every way, a different movie. It contains more story, more monsters, and there’s even a musical number. Ultimately, what we’ve delivered is a love story 25 years in the making.

Did…did they say “a musical number?”

And here is the full breakdown of special features on both versions of the set. Y’know, I don’t usually get excited about super-deluxe editions, and the regular “special edition” set should be quite enough to satisfy curiosity, but I’ve gotta say, that limited edition three disc version sounds pretty exciting. Then again, I’m a big fan. So much for objectivity.

I am, however, a little disappointed that if you want to see the new transfer of the original cut on Blu-ray, you have to buy the limited edition version. I have no problem with studios special edition-ing stuff, especially in the case of a film like Nightbreed (or even the somewhat disappointing Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut) where we know that there’s practically another version of the movie sitting somewhere, but they’ve got to make the original easily available. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s annoying.
