Tom Holland Reportedly Saved Disney-Sony Spider-Man Deal

The young webslinger was a key player in unsticking the mess Marvel and Sony made with their Spider-Man feud.

Just when Tom Holland thought he was out, he pulled… THEM back in.

A new report out of THR attributes Tom Holland with facilitating the renewed deal between Disney and Sony to keep Spider-Man in the MCU. The actor, who has been a linchpin in three of Marvel’s Russo brothers-directed MCU installments, and has also starred in two standalone Spider-Man projects for both studios, apparently refused to give up on renewing the ties between them, even after any proposed deal was declared “100 percent dead.”

Holland must have quite some sway with Sony as the lead in both the Spider-Man franchise and the star of the long-in-gestation Uncharted film, and is said to have made “multiple appeals” to both Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony boss Tom Rothman in an attempt to resolve the deadlock that they’d reached in regards to putting Peter Parker in more MCU films.

Sony had previously stated that MCU mastermind Kevin Feige was clearly too busy working on other MCU outings to give another Spider-Man project the attention it needed, so it’s fair to say they looked a little silly after Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy announced that Feige was to start work on a new Star Wars film in addition to his already-packed schedule. THR says that the major issues with the Spider-Man deal naturally boiled down to money, though, with Disney first offering to pay out 50 percent of a third Spider-Man film’s budget in exchange for 50 percent of the gross, which did not fly well with Sony.

Now, after Holland pointed to an “outpouring of fan support” behind a potential new deal, Disney has agreed to “a considerable stake” in the third movie, amounting to more than the 5 percent of the gross that they got for both Homecoming and Far From Home. Somewhat buried in the report is the news that the threequel has already been given a release date – July 16, 2021.

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Feige said of the recent twist in the tale. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
