By now, you’ve probably heard that there is no mid credits scene or post credits scene in Avengers: Endgame. It doesn’t need one. After that three hour runtime, and plenty of satisfying (and exhausting) emotional pyrotechnics to go with the cosmic ones, Endgame had nothing to gain by adding anything else. Even movie theaters seem relieved, using it as an excuse to clear out audiences faster so they can show the film as often as possible.

Since the practice was first introduced in 2008 with Iron Man, where a surprised Tony Stark finds Nick Fury waiting for him in his office wanting to talk about something called “the Avenger initiative,” Marvel’s post credits scenes have been a staple, sometimes even a highlight, of their blockbuster assembly line. The practice proved so popular that the studio began inserting two scenes, a mid credits and a post credits scene. The mid credits scene soon became the more dramatic, and the one the most likely to impact or set up future films in the series, while the post credits was often less story driven and sometimes even purely comedic. Avengers: Endgame finishes on some powerful notes, whether it’s Tony Stark’s funeral or the final fate of Steve Rogers, and it’s an effective conclusion to Marvel Studios‘ 22 film “Infinity Saga” which saw the formation of the Avengers and Thanos’ rise to near-godhood. Teasing the Fantastic Four or the eventual arrival of Galactus or the first hints of the existence of mutants would only cheapen that accomplishment. But while Avengers: Endgame doesn’t have a post credits scene, it’s still worth sitting through to the very end (if your bladder can wait another couple of minutes).

If you listen very carefully as Alan Silvestri’s score fades out, you can hear a faint clanging sound. It’s not part of the music, and it’s just faint enough that you could almost mistake it from coming from outside your theater. This is almost certainly the sound of Tony Stark forging the Mark I armor in the cave during the events of Iron Man in 2008. It’s a subtle final tribute to the hero who made the MCU possible, and a reminder of how far the MCU story has come over the last 11 years.

Place your bets on what the first end credits scene will be when MCU Phase 4 kicks off down in the comments.
