The one before this isn’t exactly a trailer, it’s just a TV spot, but there’s a couple of seconds of new footage in it. But we can start making educated guesses about what the next volume of “Awesome Mix” will contain, since we first got Sweet’s “Fox on the Run” and then Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” but now…we get some Bowie.
Yes, that’s “Suffragette City” from Bowie’s immortal The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars album. We already got one cut from that record in the last movie, with the flawless “Moonage Daydream” so another Bowie tune for this one seems like it fits right on the menu.
Among other things, the trailer gave us this next shot, which not only gives off strong Mike Hodges Flash Gordon vibes, but also has our first look at Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, who seems to be the film’s villain.
James Gunn explained why they’re using so much Baby Groot in the movie here.
We’ve also got the first teaser and its filled with all of the wit, wonder, action, and heart-warming moments (seriously, Drax gives Peter Quill an unsolicitied hug) we’ve come to expect from this franchise. Maybe you saw it when you went to see Doctor Strange!

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Story
This is the closest thing to an official synopsis Marvel is handing out right now:
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
I’m really curious about that “old foes become new allies” thing, as well as the “fan-favorite characters” part.
If you’re looking for inspiration from the comics, you’re out of luck. James Gunn has already promised that the movie is “not really based on anything.”
“You’ll have to wait and see but it’s very different. There are things in the comic book that on film seemed to come out a little too Star Wars to me. I’m not a great fan of the name J’son. So there’ll be a lot of differences from what’s in there.”
“There will be no Infinity Stones in Vol. 2,” James Gunn told a fan on Facebook. This almost certainly means that Thanos won’t be pulling the strings this time around.

Even better, this makes it even less likely that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will spend unnecessary time setting up Avengers: Infinity War. Let the Guardians do their thing in their own corner of the Marvel Universe. No need to go any further with it than that!
During another Facebook Q&A, director James Gunn spilled some light on a concept art image revealed by Empirethat shows Peter Quill, Gamora, Baby Groot, Rocket, and Drax fighting a many-tentacled, many-teethed beast in space, saying: “That’s an Abilisk, a multi-dimensional being, and the Guardians have been hired to fight him.”
Though Gunn didn’t go into any more details, some of the internet is already latching onto that adjective “multi-dimensional” as a possible clue that the many realities of Doctor Strangecould somehow tie into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.At this point, that is purely hopeful speculation. (Though, we did get a hint that there will be some crossover between Thor: Ragnarokand Doctor Strangefrom a recent Ragnarokset photo.)
The coolest part of this concept art might be that peek at Baby Groot, who doesn’t seem to be very helpful in the fight against the abelisk, but is pretty darn cute. Teasing Baby Groot’s arc in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.,Gunn said: “Obviously, Baby Groot is much different than Groot in the comics. He’s not just grown Groot; he’s, y’know, different … Don’t expect Baby Groot to do too much changing in the second movie.”
Karen Gillan has been speaking about what to expect from Nebula this time around.
“What I love about the second movie for Nebula in particular is that we get – we know that she’s a pretty angry woman with some daddy issues. [But] in the second movie, we’re going to start to see how much pain her father actually caused her, and we’re going to delve right into the relationship with her sister Gamora,” the actress told The Wrap. “I think we might even feel a tinge of sympathy towards Nebula this time, because we really start to see the emotional crack in her character. I was just allowed to completely explore that and take it to a completely different dimension with her. I was really happy about that.”

One of the key mysteries this one will solve is just who Peter Quill’s father is. To us, he’s Kurt Russell. To comics fans he might just be Ego, The Living Planet.
“To let somebody love you is a very difficult thing, especially when you’re damaged goods. And all of the Guardians are damaged goods,” director James Gunn told USA Today. “It runs the gamut of emotions for [Star-Lord], wanting to understand why his father wasn’t around to quickly idolising him and ultimately learning the reality of the relationship and comparing the man who sired him to the man who raised him.”
CBR has some images of one of the toys that reveals what Ego looks like…in his non-planet form, though.
Guardians of the Galaxy Concept Art
James Gunn unveiled the first look at some Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 concept art via Facebook, and it’s got a couple of surprises. For one thing, check out adorable Baby Groot. But for another, this is our first look at Mantis, who will be played by Pom Klementieff in the movie. And how can you not love Rocket Raccoon with a jetpack?
The footage that was shown in Hall H hasn’t been made public, James Gunn is cool with giving you a look at what’s coming in some other ways, like this reveal of the new squad of Yondu’s Ravagers.
The official press release confirms that the core original cast is back, Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana as Gamora; Dave Bautista as Drax; Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket; and even Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula (you didn’t really think we had seen the last of her, did you?), and Sean Gunn as Kraglin.

There are two characters from the first film who won’t make their return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Neither Nova Corps member Dey nor Benicio Del Toro’s The Collector will be in this one. The news comes via James Gunn’s Facebook page.
New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (TheHateful Eight, Furious 7). Kurt Russell is indeed playing Star-Lord’s father…Ego, the Living Planet. Well, eventually. James Gunn confirmed that Pom Klementieff is playing Marvel Comics character Mantis, as well. Steve Agee is also on board.
Tommy Flanagan, recently known as Chibs on Sons of Anarchy, will play Yondu’s new right hand man in the Ravagers. Heroic Hollywood, who first reported the news, claims that Yondu and the Ravagers have a bounty out on Rocket Raccoon this time around.
Nathan Fillion had an amusing cameo as the voice of one of the intergalactic inmates in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, and now he’s about to have another cameo as a more high profile member of the Marvel Universe.
With shooting underway, it appears some sequences are taking place on Earth, and there’s a “Simon Williams Film Festival” happening, with a movie theater all decked out with posters featuring Nathan Fillion’s face in various roles…including a biopic of Tony Stark. Simon Williams is better known to Marvel fans as part time superhero/part time actor, “Wonder Man.” It’s unlikely that we’re going to see anything resembling Wonder Man in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but this sounds like a fun way to sneak him in. The images, honestly, look like crap, so I’m not putting them here, but you can see them at ComicBook.com if you’d like.
Director James Gunn eagerly snapped a shot of Guardiansold and new together for rehearsals, which you can view below. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan (with hair!), and more are heeding the call.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Villain
JoBlo.com has been getting some quality Marvel scoops lately, and now they appear to have word on who the villain of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is. With all of the official casting news out there (more on that on page two), there’s been no word on who Elizabeth Debicki is playing (there was some speculation that she was playing Phyla-Vell/Quasar). You might recognize Ms. Debicki from her recent turn on AMC’s excellent The Night Manager, which starred another Marvel villain, Tom Hiddleston.
JoBlo reports that Ms. Debicki is the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2villain, Kismet. Kismet (also known as Paragon and Her) is an artificial life form created by a group of scientists known as the Enclave. She’s got tremendous cosmic power at her disposal. But here’s another cool thing…she’s connected to Adam Warlock, a character that we absolutely need to see on screen fighting Thanos at some point.
The same scientists who created Adam Warlock also created Kismet. But she was their second attempt, while Warlock was their first. So if Kismet is in the movie, that might at least mean that Adam Warlock already exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether he’s actually been cast or will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is another story.
