Dora the Explorer Movie Release Date and Trailer

A teenage live action Dora the Explorer is heading to the big screen in Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

The popular Nickelodeon animated series Dora The Explorer is headed to the movies in a new-live action venture with Dora and the Lost City of Gold. The idea of the film is not to focus on Dora as the seven-year-old we see in the cartoons, but instead as a teenager, as she moves to the big city to live with her cousin Diego.

Nickelodeon’s official synopsis for the movie reads:

Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents, nothing could prepare Dora (Isabela Moner) for her most dangerous adventure ever – High School. Always the explorer, Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (her best friend, a monkey), Diego (Jeffrey Wahlberg), a mysterious jungle inhabitant (Eugenio Derbez), and a rag tag group of teens on a live-action adventure to save her parents (Eva Longoria, Michael Peña) and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost city of gold.

What’s a little odd here is the teenage angle. The original show was a massive hit for Nickelodeon, running from 2000-2014 with 172 episodes aired. The series, about a little girl who goes on quests and solves puzzles with her monkey Boots, translated worldwide, generated a ton of merchandising ranging from Legos to video games and even yielded stage shows.

Just below is the first trailer, which arrived back in March. It’s established pretty early on that “exploring is not a game.” Perhaps that’s why “Explorer” was dropped from the title.
