New Mario & Luigi Game May Be on the Way

The Mario & Luigi RPG series, previously shepherded by AlphaDream, could be making a comeback at Nintendo.

Mario And Luigi Superstar Saga

A new Mario & Luigi game may be in development, if a new Mario & Luigi trademark filed by Nintendo is to be believed. Let’s Go Digital reports that this trademark, filed in South America, pertains to “computer game cartridges; game memory cards; computer game software; video game memory cards; interactive entertainment software to play video games [and] covers for mobile phones.”

If this report turns out to be accurate, it certainly suggests that Nintendo is planning something significant for the popular Italian plumbers. And the logical assumption seems to be that Mario & Luigi, the iconic siblings’ crossover venture, could be making a comeback.

This is exciting news for fans of the franchise, not least because its original custodians – the developers at AlphaDream – recently hit some troubled times, leaving the future of the series in doubt.

Mario & Luigi, as a brand in its own right, began in 2003 with AlphaDream developing Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the Game Boy Advance. A Mario-infused RPG game set across the Mushroom Kingdom and the Beanbean Kingdom, this game spawned a strong spinoff franchise for Nintendo’s beloved brothers, with AlphaDream leading the development on seven releases in total. The most recent of these was the remake of Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey on 3DS, which released in Japan in 2018 and everywhere else in 2019.

AlphaDream also worked on Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 for Nintendo Switch, but the company declared bankruptcy in 2019 because it could not keep up with its growing debt. Now that Nintendo has filed this new trademark, it seems plausible that the company has plans to carry on developing Mario & Luigi games with or without the involvement of the team from AlphaDream.

Nintendo hasn’t announced anything through its usual channels just yet, but we’ll be sure to let you know if we hear anything. It’ll be interesting to see if this is a Nintendo Switch game, a mobile game, or something else entirely.
