Avatar Sequels Titles Revealed

James Cameron’s return to Pandora has a new name.

Considering James Cameron is currently filming four back-to-back epics – handcrafting a ready-made franchise from the slightly forgotten memory of the highest grossing film of all time, there hasn’t been much news trickling out about the Avatar sequels recently.

Avatar 2 has been talked about since before the first film even opened nine years ago, and Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 have sprung up in the interim – with Cameron revealing his insanely ambitious plans for two pairs of consecutive sequels.

The good news is that we don’t have to call them Avatar 23and anymore. The BBC has “seen documentation” which seems to confirm the titles of the new films, listing them as Avatar: The Way of WaterAvatar: The Seed BearerAvatar: The Tulkun Rider and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa.

We already know that the first sequel will take us under the sea of Pandora, so it makes sense for the next one to be called The Way Of Water. Cameron (who loves anything to do with deep sea exploration) is reportedly pioneering a new form of underwater performance capture technology for the film, telling Collider that what he’s doing has never been done before. “The problem with water is not the underwater part, but the interface between the air and the water, which forms a moving mirror. That moving mirror reflects all the dots and markers, and it creates a bunch of false markers. It’s a little bit like a fighter plane dumping a bunch of chaff to confuse the radar system of a missile.”

We also know that there’s a lot of much younger actors joining Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington in the cast list, suggesting that the film might follow Neytiri and Jake’s children over a longer period of time. Does that suggest a plot for The Seed Bearer? “Tulkans” haven’t been mentioned before in the Avatar-verse, but “Eywa” is basically the film’s version of The Force, the all-seeing, all-knowing spirit power of the Na’vi.

Last week, Sigourney Weaver, who returns as Dr. Grace Augustine, told The Hollywood Reporter that “we just finished shooting 2 and 3” and that she was about to start being “busy doing Avatar 4 and 5.

The release dates have shifted a lot already, but the four films are currently pegged for December 2020, December 2021, December 2024, and December 2025.
