Star Wars: Dark Forces Gets HD Fan Remake

Much like the fan remake of Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, this fan-made version of Star Wars: Dark Forces looks great.

There is clearly a hunger among Star Wars fans gaming experiences that can offer epic modern visuals, as Star Wars: Dark Forces becomes the latest game from the LucasArts back-catalog to get a fan-made remake in Unreal Engine 4.

EA’s handling of the Star Wars license has resulted in only two AAA titles: Battlefront and its much-maligned sequel. Although Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is still on the way, the amount of canceled Star Wars games (and the lack of single-player Star Wars titles) seems to have inspired fans to make their own fun.

Following on from the news that one fan is remaking Star Wars Episode 1: Racer in Unreal Engine 4, footage has spread around the web of this other fan-led Star Wars remake project. This one centers around the classic ’90s shooter. You can watch some footage from the remake below:

This project is a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. Dark Forces originally released on PC and PlayStation in the mid-1990s, as the first installment of what would become the beloved Jedi Knight series. Although the game was a fan favorite that spawned a sequel, we hadn’t expected to see such a visually gorgeous new version so many years later.

This Star Wars: Dark Forces remake comes to us from Obsidian Entertainment’s Jason Lewis, who has been working on the project in his spare time with some other designers. The YouTube video was made by a user named Bluedrake42. The “Dark Forces Remastered Demo” can be downloaded at this link, if you fancy having a look for yourself.
