The expanding array of prestige anthology television from Ryan Murphy is already deep into its long-set plans. While delays pushed back the would-be Hurricane Katrina-centric follow-up to Season 1’s The People v. OJ Simpson story, Murphy’s acclaimed FX anthology series American Crime Story has returned with another murder tale. Brandishing the lengthy title, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, the second season focuses on the world-famous 1997 murder of fashion giant Gianni Versace, starring Edgar Ramirez, Penélope Cruz, Ricky Martin and Darren Criss. With notable production delays plaguing the Katrina iteration of ACS, starring Annette Bening as Hurricane Katrina-embattled Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco, Versace, formerly set as Season 3, now serves as Season 2 of the series.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story depicts the Versace fashion empire in the wake of the 1997 Miami Beach murder of founder Gianni Versace. Penélope Cruz is plays the role of Gianni’s younger sister Donatella Versace, who, after her brother’s murder, became the face of the international fashion house. Cruz’s Donatella serves as the series protagonist, dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy and tasked with filling some colossally couture shoes. Edgar Ramirez (Hands of Stone, The Girl on the Train) plays the martyred Gianni, with Darren Criss (Glee, American Horror Story) playing his disturbed assailant Andrew Cunanan.
