The 100 Prequel Series: Backdoor Pilot Details

The eighth episode of The 100 Season 7 will also serve as a backdoor pilot for the potential prequel series.

The 100 fans, mark your calendars for July 8th. This is the broadcast date for the seventh season episode of The 100 that will act as a backdoor pilot for The 100 prequel series in development at The CW.

A backdoor pilot is the industry term for when an episode of an already-existing TV show does double duty as a regular episode and a concept for a spin-off show. The episode and potential series will be set 97 years prior to the events of The 100, shortly after the nuclear apocalypse that ended most life on Earth and sent a portion of humanity into space to wait out the nuclear fallout for the next century.

Jason Rothenberg, who developed The 100 series from the young adult book series of the same name by Kass Morgan, will also be developing the prequel series, alongside Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo. Rothenberg wrote the backdoor pilot episode, which was directed by Ed Fraiman.

The episode, titled “Anaconda,” will air at 8pm on Wednesday, July 8th. It is the eighth episode of the seventh season. Check out the synopsis:

Clarke (Eliza Taylor) confronts a new adversary. A surprising connection takes us back to the past and the nuclear apocalypse that destroyed the Earth.

And here is the promo…

Deadline previously announced that Iola Evans, Adain Bradley, and Leo Howard will play the core characters of the backdoor pilot and the potential new series.

Evans will play Callie, who is described as “whip-smart and passionate with a rebellious streak to boot.” The character description continues: “Callie has spent years ignoring expectations in order to fight for the causes in which she believes. But when the apocalypse devastates the world she had been working so hard to save, Callie must find a new purpose, and future, for all that remains of humanity.”

Bradley will portray Reese, who is described as “hard-working and headstrong.” The character description continues: “Reese has spent a lifetime in fierce competition with his beloved sister, Callie. But when the opportunity to finally prove his worth comes with an incredible cost, Reese must figure out what lines he is willing to cross to finally come out on top.”

Howard will play August, who is described as “a rebellious and passionate musician.” The character description continues: “August is a member of a radical environmental group dedicated to saving the planet by any means necessary. After the apocalypse, he must figure out how to go on when everything he had been fighting for is gone.”

Evans and Bradley have series-regular options should the pilot be picked up to series.

In addition to new characters, the episode will also star Bob Morley, Marie Avgeropoulos, Lindsey Morgan, Richard Harmon, Tasya Teles, Shannon Kook, JR Bourne, Shelby Flannery and Chuku Modu, so it sounds like the episode will definitely tie in to existing, ongoing Season 7 storylines.
