Bridgerton Soundtrack Details: Which Modern Pop Songs Are Used?
The Bridgerton soundtrack cleverly translates contemporary pop music into classical covers. Here are all of the songs that make an appearance on the Netflix show.
I love a good period drama that eschews “period-appropriate” tunes (whatever that means, when you’re talking non-diegetic music) to go with something a bit more modern. The Bridgerton soundtrack takes this route, with a twist. The Netflix series includes classical versions of a handful of contemporary pop tunes, from Ariana Grande to Shawn Mendes classical covers.
“Everything on the show has a contemporary sensibility to it,” Bridgerton showrunner Chris Van Dusen told Seventeen. “Even though we’re in the 19th century, you sometimes forget about that and that’s intentional. We wanted modern audiences to relate to the show and see themselves on screen.”
Speaking to Oprah Mag specifically about the Bridgerton soundtrack, Van Dusen said: “The music for us was kind of an evolution we found when making the show as the cuts were coming in. It really goes to the idea of making this feel different than your other period shows. Whether it’s music or the world of the show, the scripts, the sets, the costumes; it all comes back to infusing things through our own unique modern lens and making things feel relatable to whoever’s watching.”
Alexandra Patsavas was the music supervisor on Bridgerton, and we honestly don’t talk enough about how much Patsavas’ work has helped shape the last few decades of popular culture. Patsavas has been behind the soundtrack curation on projects like The Twilight Saga, The O.C., Grey’s Anatomy, and Gossip Girl—movies and (mostly) TV known for how integral their soundtrack has been to their storytelling.
Speaking to IGN about her work on The O.C. back in 2005, Patsavas said: “I think that Josh [Schwartz], our tech producer/ creator always intended that music be a character on the show and so much of the music is selected for Marissa and Seth and Summer, and also just to enhance whatever emotional need a scene might have. But, you know, we definitely keep the characters in mind and I think that his interest in pop culture lends itself to a lot of indie music that we use.”
