15 Movies That Actually Get Guns Right
Realism is not something every movie needs to have. Sometimes you just want to see the hero fire a hail of bullets against the bad guys and call it a day. Once you get into how guns actually work, however, the fact that they’re rarely used realistically can start to take its toll on your immersion.
This is why we’ve gathered here the movies that get it right. Or at least most of it right, since after all, these performers aren’t in an actual gun fight. But they still try and succeed, so if you want a movie where firearms are treated with respect, you’re sure to get your fill here.

Heat
Michael Mann went all out for authenticity. The famous shootout features cops who are totally unprepared for a dynamic firefight, while both sides use actual heist tactics and eventually run out of ammunition.

John Wick
Keanu Reeves trained extensively for this role, and it shows. The film features accurate trigger discipline, frequent reloads that actually match the magazine capacity, and realistic close-quarters action under seven yards. Just don’t think about the silencers.

Collateral
Directed by Michael Mann, this 2004 action thriller stars Tom Cruise as a hitman. It is widely praised by experts for its incredibly grounded approach to weapon handling, drawing, and retaining a firearm under pressure.

The Way of the Gun
Christopher McQuarrie made sure the gunplay was spot on. Expect realistic gunshot loudness, proper trigger discipline, one-handed reloads, and a final shootout that perfectly demonstrates team tactics and suppressing fire.

Sicario
This 2015 thriller follows an FBI agent navigating a brutal cartel war. The tactical movements, weapon handling, and tense engagements are praised for looking exactly like how highly trained operators actually clear rooms and return fire.
