15 Movie Scenes That Were Conceived Completely Differently Than What’s in the Final Cut

Movies rarely premier exactly as they were first imagined. A scene can be rewritten after filming, changed during editing, or completely reworked when a director realizes that the original idea is not landing the way it should. Looking at these alternate versions is a good reminder of how much filmmaking happens after the cameras stop rolling. Some of these ideas were filmed, others existed only in scripts or storyboards, but all of them show how different the finished movies could have been.

Up (2009)

Pixar originally imagined Carl and Ellie’s relationship with considerably more physical comedy, including a version where Ellie punched Carl during an argument, before the filmmakers reshaped the opening into the quiet, heartbreaking montage audiences know.

The Dark Knight (2008)

The Joker’s hospital escape was originally shot with the explosion taking place behind the windows of the departing bus, but the destruction was difficult to see, so Nolan changed the sequence to show the Joker outside the building.

Independence Day (1996)

Russell Casse’s final attack was originally conceived as a deliberately absurd crop duster mission, with him attaching a bomb to his old aircraft before flying directly into the alien ship.

Get Out (2017)

Jordan Peele originally ended the movie with Chris being arrested by the police after escaping the Armitage family, rather than being rescued by Rod, creating a much bleaker final sequence.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

The movie originally included an enormous sequence showing Thanos attacking Xandar and taking the Power Stone, but the roughly 45 minute sequence was removed, and the event was left to happen off screen.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Black Widow and Hawkeye’s battle on Vormir was originally much larger, with the two characters fighting Thanos and his forces before Natasha made her sacrifice.

Don’t Look Up (2021)

The original post credits sequence had the wealthy survivors competing with each other over how much money they would pay workers to build houses on their new planet.

Death Becomes Her (1992)

The original ending had Ernest escaping the women, faking his death, and eventually living happily with another woman decades later, a much more upbeat conclusion than the one that made the final cut.

Birdman (2014)

The original ending reportedly placed Johnny Depp in Riggan’s dressing room with a Pirates of the Caribbean poster behind him before Alejandro González Iñárritu abandoned the idea and rewrote the finale during production.

We Live in Time (2024)

The film originally ended with Almut experiencing remission, but director John Crowley eventually replaced that ending with the ice rink sequence and the quieter scene involving Tobias and their daughter.

The Ring (2002)

The movie originally included a much more elaborate sequence showing the cursed videotape being created from inside a VCR, but the computer generated montage was ultimately removed.

Go (1999)

The finale involving Gaines’ apartment was originally written differently, but after the filmed version failed to work as expected, the filmmakers reshot the sequence and replaced it with the simpler version seen in the movie.

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

The ending originally left Nadine and Erwin’s relationship more ambiguous, but test audiences responded strongly to the pair, leading the filmmakers to shoot an additional moment that gave their relationship a clearer emotional conclusion.

The Princess and the Frog (2009)

The filmmakers considered ending the movie with Facilier’s magic backfiring and turning him into a fly that was immediately eaten by a frog, as well as a wizard’s duel between Mama Odie and Facilier, before settling on the final climax.
