Maleficent 2 Release Date and Trailer
Angelina Jolie returns for Disney sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which is coming in time for Halloween.
Following the sizeable success of the original, Disney moved ahead with a sequel to its 2014 Sleeping Beauty-inspired film, Maleficent. While the first film, directed by Robert Stromberg, already told the story of Sleeping Beauty from the villain’s point-of-view –all while turning said awesome villain into the boring hero of the story–Disney is convinced there is more money… err, story left to find in the property!
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the official name of the sequel. The film reunites Angelina Jolie with her Princess Aurora, Elle Fanning. This is Jolie’s first sequel since Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, all the way back in 2003. And since she passed on sequels for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Wanted, and Salt, this is kind of a big deal.
Maleficent 2 Poster
Disney unveiled a poster for Maleficent 2 during their D23 Expo and it’s fairly epic.

Maleficent 2 Details
Here’s the official synopsis.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a fantasy adventure that picks up several years after “Maleficent,” in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora. The film continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.
The original synopsis had this say:
This new fantasy-adventure continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon-to-be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is directed by Joachim Rønning, who is best known for co-directing Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He also co-directed Kon-Tiki. He replaces Robert Stromberg who helmed the first movie. The picture has a screenplay by Linda Woolverton, who in addition to writing the first movie also scripted Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, and Alice Through the Looking Glass for the studio. Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster also worked on the story. They are joined by producers in star Jolie, Joe Roth and Duncan Henderson, as well as executive producers Matt Smith, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Michael Vieira.
The sequel commenced production on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, with Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning reprising their leading roles. It also sees Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville as the fairies Knotgrass, Thistlewit, and Diaval. Notably, Harris Dickinson (The Darkest Minds, Trust) replaces Brenton Thwaites in the role of Prince Phillip. But far more eye-catchingly the film adds to its cast Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith.
Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Doctor Strange) and Ed Skrein (Deadpool, Game of Thrones) have also been cast in unspecified roles.
Judith Shekoni will field a supporting role as Shrike, a magical character who “befriends” Maleficent, as per Variety. The British Shekoni is probably best known for her role in Heroes Reborn and for appearing in Twilight Breaking Saga: Breaking Dawn II – Part 2.
