Mike Peterson, a novelist who ran for Mayor in Durham, N.C., said he was innocent of the death of his wife when he pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Investigation Discovery will challenge that in An American Murder Mystery: The Staircase. The all-new the three-part special event promises to explore the “salacious secrets” to get to the bottom of the “suspicious death of Kathleen Peterson. The latest installment of the American Murder Mystery franchise premieres on April 8.
“Michael Peterson appears to have it all – a doting wife, a loving family and a successful literary career – but, that all changes on December 9, 2001, when Michael’s wife, Kathleen, is found dead in a pool of blood at the bottom of a staircase in their home in Durham, North Carolina,” reads the ID press statement. “Michael claims it was a tragic accident. Investigators, however, fear something far more sinister is at play and direct their attention to him. Did Michael Peterson murder his wife?”
“The death of Kathleen Peterson is one of the most confounding cases in history,” Henry Schleiff, Group President of Investigation Discovery, American Heroes Channel and Destination America, said in a statement. “There are so many pieces to this puzzle – from Michael’s salacious secrets to investigator misconduct to the odd owl theory – so, we are eager to bring our viewers the first complete look at this fascinating crime and subsequent trial.”
An American Murder Mystery: The Staircase exploring the “shocking theories, critical evidence and surprising secrets that thrust this case into the national spotlight.” The series will feature all-new and exclusive interviews with key players in the case, including Kathleen’s sister Candace Zamperini, and Brent Wolgamott, a “male escort whom Michael was emailing with at the time of the crime,” according to the press statement. The special will also interview legal experts, jurors and reporters who covered the case from the very beginning.
