Outlanderseason 2 is based on the second book in Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling Outlanderbook series: Dragonfly in Amber. Here’s the official synopsis for season 2:
“Season Two of Outlander begins as Claire and Jamie arrive in France, hell-bent on infiltrating the Jacobite rebellion led by Prince Charles Stuart, and stopping the battle of Culloden. With the help of his cousin Jared, a local wine merchant, Jamie and Claire are thrown into the lavish world of French society, where intrigue and parties are abundant, but political gain proves far less fruitful. Altering the course of history presents challenges that begin to weigh on the very fabric of their relationship. However, armed with the knowledge of what lies ahead, Claire and Jamie must race to prevent a doomed Highland uprising, and the extinction of Scottish life as they know it.”

Outlander Season 2 Finale
Starz just announced that the Outlander season 2 finale will be 90 minutes long and will feature the introduction of fan-favorite characters Brianna and Roger Wakefield. (Well, technically, they have already been introduced as children on the show, but now we’ll be seeing them all grown up.)
Starz also released an official synopsis for the extra long season finale. Here’s the synopsis for “Dragonfly in the Amber”:

Starz will also be hosting an Outlanderseason 2 marathon starting at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 2nd. That will give you an entire week to revel in the tragic romance that is Claire Fraser’s time traveling existence before watching the epic 90-minute season finale a week later on July 9th.
Outlander Season 2 Trailer
Check out the first footage from Outlander season 2. This first trailer focuses on Claire and Jamie’s mission in France to change the course of history by stopping the Jacobite rebellion and, you know, saving Highlander culture forever. #AchievableGoals
Starz also released this featurette, showing a bit more footage and giving us some insight from showrunner Ronald D. Moore on the historical context of Claire and Jaime’s history-changing plan, the visual change as Outlandertravels to opulent Paris, and the tensions in Jamie and Claire’s relationship in season 2…
The last trailer released before the season 2 premiere stays tighter on Claire’s own time-traveling journey, beginning with Murtagh trying to wrap his brain around Claire’s jump through time and ending with the tease that Claire will travel back to the mid-20th century — and to Frank — before the season is over…
Here is a season 2 promo specifically focused on the character arc of Jamie Fraser…
Outlander Season 2 Cast
Starz released gorgeous official character portraits for the major players in Outlanderseason 2. There are 13 in all, with the following characters from season 1 getting their very own portraits: Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), Murtagh Fraser (Duncan Lacroix), Dougall MacKenzie (Graham McTavish), Colum MacKenzie (Gary Lewis), Angus Mhor (Stephen Walters), and Rupert MacKenzie (Grant O’Rourke).
There are also some new characters amongst the portraits, including: Louise de Rohan (Claire Sermonne), Charles Edward Stuart (Andrew Gower), Mary Hawkins (Rosie Day), King Louis XV (Lionel Lingelser), and Le Comte St. Germain (Stanley Weber). You might want to pay particularly close attention to Le Comte St. Germain, as he will be playing season 2’s villain.
What can we learn from the Outlanderkey art Starz just released for season 2? Well, it certainly sells the opulence of the upcoming season. We are no longer in the rough, dirty hills and castles of the Scottish countryside. Instead, we have a new “etiquette of war,” set in the opulence of Parisian court — and Claire and Jamie are more invested in the game than ever…
As you can see in the image above, our two stars are the only characters staring at the camera — and the rest of the French court characters we’ll be meeting in season 2 are too busy looking at one another to be rightly suspicious that the Frasers are up to something. The only character who understands Claire and Jamie’s true importance — and power — is Murtagh Fraser, who we see in one of the trailers (available below) working through all of the years time-traveling Claire has lived through.
In addition to the characters featured in the above character portraits, Outlanderhas added quite a few new, important faces to its cast…
French actor Dominique Piñon is joining the cast of Outlander for season two. His character is the “mysterious Master Raymond.” Via TVLine, the character is a “healer with a great deal of knowledge regarding secret matters, both political and occult,” who will develop a bond with Claire. The actor is best known for his role in Alien: Resurrection.
Richard Rankin will play Roger Wakefield, the adopted son of the Reverend Wakefield, who was seen only briefly last season but who may become increasingly important if the source material is any indication.
Finally, we have the addition of Sophie Skelton in the role of fan-favorite Brianna. Brianna is Claire and Jamie’s daughter, a character who has her own time-traveling adventures (if the TV show follows the plot of the books, that is). Talking to Zap2it about the casting of the role, showrunner Ronald D. Moore said about Brianna: “You will get to see her [but] not until we get back to the 1968 story, which won’t be for a while — towards the end of the season.”
Outlanderseason 2 officially finished filming in mid-April. Series star Sam Heughan tweeted an image of he and co-star Caitriona Balfe from the last day of filming, captioning it: “Mud… Wind… Must be Outlander S2!? Had no idea where I was after Aus, Japan, LA/NYC. Last DAY official!!”
