The 1990s have given us many EXXXTREME pop culture warriors responsible for chaos and countless deaths. Cable from X-Men. Azrael from Batman comics. Carnage. Duke Nukem. The Maxx. The Burger King Kids Club. All very dangerous and in-your-face, but two parties of note are Spawn and the entire cast of Mortal Kombat. After decades of edgy designs and over-the-top gore, it’s time for these guys to finally cross paths.

Mortal Kombat 11’s Kombat Pack DLC is coming to an end and Spawn is the final roster addition, joining the likes of Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, the Terminator, Sindel, and the Joker. While we’ve known about Spawn’s inclusion for a while, at Sunday’s Final Kombat 2020 tournament, NetherRealm Studios finally gave us the long-awaited gameplay trailer.

In fact, not only was Ed Boon there for the reveal but reluctant-sunglasses-wearer Keith David, who voiced Spawn in the HBO animated series, appeared to confirm that he will reprise his role.

Here’s the trailer in all of its giant-caped glory:

Created by Todd McFarlane in 1992, Spawn was introduced in his own Image Comics series. Al Simmons was an assassin who died and sold his soul to the Devil (er, Malebolgia) in order to return to Earth and see his wife again. He became a soldier of Hell, armed with all sorts of overpowered abilities so that he can one day lead Malebolgia’s armies against Heaven. Of course, this being a deal with the Devil, he got screwed over hard because he reappeared on Earth years later and in the form of a burned corpse.

Long story short, he ended up going rogue and becoming an enemy of both Heaven and Hell. All while wielding guns, chains, a giant cape, and magical powers that involve lots of bright green effects. Fortunately, Spawn will have all of his toys in Mortal Kombat 11.

Seriously, look at that crazy Fatal Blow attack where there are dozens of guns nested in the inside of his cape. That is so rad!

Fittingly, the trailer points out that Spawn’s natural Mortal Kombat counterpart is Scorpion, another antihero who was manipulated into being a soldier of Hell. Meanwhile, as Keith David noted, Spawn vs. Joker is another built-in rivalry, mainly because Spawn hates clowns. He’s not a fan of Batman either, but that’s another story.

Spawn will be available for early access on March 17. He comes with “Matinee” costumes for Jacqui Briggs, Erron Black, and Nightwolf, as well as a Spawn cosplay costume for Jacqui.

No word yet on Kombat Pack 2, other than that it’s in the pipeline. There have been plenty of rumors as to who could be joining the roster as part of the next batch of DLC. One name that keeps popping up is Ash Williams from Evil Dead/Army of Darkness. Other rumored characters for Kombat Pack 2 include Sheeva, Fujin, Sektor, and Cyrax. The latter two are already NPC opponents in the game’s story mode.
