17 Movie Plans So Inefficient They Could Never Actually Work

IMDb

Are movie plans meant to be realistic? For the most part, no, and that’s part of the fun. What they need to be, is believable. If we can’t buy that the main character can do anything they set out to do, or if everything relies on the whims of lady luck, the hero’s journey feels less deserved and more accidental.

This is why we’ve gathered here the movies with plans so out there that, even with our best attempts at suspending our disbelief, just wouldn’t work. This doesn’t mean that the following films are bad by any metric, just that you have to turn your brain off all the way down to enjoy them.

IMDb

Ocean’s Eleven, Impossibly Perfect Heist

This is the fantasy of perfect execution. The plan requires more than a dozen moving parts, all synchronized down to the second. There is absolutely zero room for human error, random chance, or unexpected problems. One wrong move and it’s over.

IMDb

Home Alone, Surprisingly Lethal Booby Traps

In the 1990 classic, 8-year-old Kevin McCallister’s traps are hilarious. In reality, a grown man taking a paint can to the face or a hot iron from that height would be facing far more than just a comical injury.

IMDb

Dark Knight Rises, Overly Complicated Siege

Bane’s plan in the 2012 film to hold an entire city hostage for months is a logistical nightmare. It assumes zero effective intervention from the outside world and that a modern metropolis could be so easily cut off and contained.

IMDb

Independence Day, Alien Computer Virus

The movie tries to explain this by suggesting the aliens’ tech was compatible with ours. Still, the idea of uploading a virus from a 90s-era laptop to a vastly superior alien mothership feels like a one-in-a-trillion shot.

IMDb

Star Wars, Conveniently Placed Exhaust Port

It was such a glaring weakness that the movie Rogue One was made just to explain it was a deliberate act of sabotage by its designer, Galen Erso. Before that, it was just an epic engineering fail that defied all logic.

IMDb

Jurassic Park, Shockingly Inept Security

The security for a park full of dinosaurs relied on a single disgruntled IT guy and had no backup power. For a project worth billions, you’d think they could afford more than one person and a few generators.

Italian Job, Perfectly Timed Traffic Jam

In this 2003 heist film, the crew hacks Los Angeles’ traffic system to create a perfect escape route. The level of precise, real-time control needed to manipulate an entire city’s traffic grid flawlessly is pure Hollywood fantasy.

IMDb

National Treasure, Centuries-Old Scavenger Hunt

Released in 2004, this movie asks us to believe a complex series of clues survived hundreds of years of American history, weather, and urban development, all waiting for one guy to find them. It’s a fun, but wildly improbable, premise.

IMDb

Goldfinger, Economically Flawed Gold Plot

The plan wasn’t stealing Fort Knox’s gold but irradiating it, making his own supply more valuable. The problem is that most of the US gold wasn’t even there, and the global economic chaos would be too unpredictable to control.

IMDb

Face/Off, Miraculous Face Transplant Surgery

Even the legendary fictional surgeon Black Jack would have called this one impossible. A perfect facial transplant with no healing time, no tissue rejection, and a magically altered voice and body type is beyond the reach of medical science.

IMDb

Mission: Impossible, Sweat-Dependent Data Theft

The famous vault scene from the 1996 film is iconic for its tension. But a security system triggered by temperature, pressure, and even a drop of sweat seems both overly complex and surprisingly easy to defeat with some rope.

IMDb

Now You See Me, Magically Impossible Thefts

This 2013 film’s magicians pull off heists that are explained away as elaborate illusions. But robbing a bank from another continent and showering a crowd with the cash goes well beyond sleight of hand into the realm of pure fantasy.

IMDb

Inception, The Dream Heist

Planting an idea deep within someone’s subconscious is a cool concept. However, the plan relies on predicting every single thought and reaction of the target across multiple dream layers, a feat that ignores how random human minds are.

IMDb

Saw, Rube Goldberg Death Traps

While John Kramer was an engineer, the time and resources to build these elaborate, flawless machines are unbelievable. In reality, homemade traps this complex would jam or fail, but Jigsaw’s always work perfectly on the first try.

IMDb

The Fugitive, Cross-Country Search While Hunted

While being the subject of a massive, nationwide manhunt, Dr. Richard Kimble somehow finds time to conduct his own complex investigation to find the real killer. Evading capture while playing detective is more than a little far-fetched.

IMDb

Superman, Tectonically Unsound Real Estate Scheme

Lex Luthor’s plan to sink California with a nuclear missile to create new beachfront property is pure comic book villainy. The sheer amount of geological chaos this would unleash makes it an absurdly risky and uncontrollable investment strategy.

IMDb

Live Free or Die Hard, Overwrought Cyberattack

A “fire sale” where hackers shut down the entire country’s infrastructure is a scary thought. The idea that every governmental system could be taken down simultaneously by one group requires a level of coordination that just isn’t realistic.
