Spotting a famous actor is usually the easy part of watching a movie or TV show. Then there are those performances that send people straight to IMDb because the familiar face on screen somehow refuses to register. Sometimes hours of prosthetics deserve the credit, while a different haircut, accent or physical transformation can occasionally do just as much damage. A few actors have become so good at disappearing into characters that audiences only discovered who they were when the credits rolled. Looking back, some seem completely obvious. Others still require a second look even when you already know exactly who is underneath all that makeup. Here are 15 big actors fans couldn’t even recognize in a role.

Colin Farrell — The Batman

Farrell virtually disappeared beneath prosthetics to become Oz Cobb, to the point that his transformation into the Penguin became almost as much of a talking point as the performance itself.

Tom Cruise — Tropic Thunder

A bald cap, prosthetics, enormous hands and a very committed dance routine turned one of the world’s most recognizable movie stars into Les Grossman. Plenty of viewers only realized it was Cruise when the credits arrived.
