15 Photos from the Peak of Hollywood’s Golden Age

Every age of cinema has its own ups and downs, its winners and losers. Yet as time passes on, the bygone eras of the medium start seeming like the time where everything shined brightest, particularly when nearly all of its protagonists are long gone. We become enamoured with the stylings and ways of old, even if we have no idea how it really was back then.

This is, in a nutshell, the Golden Age of Hollywood. The big names of the time still carry tremendous gravitas, their lives comparable to myths of the industry. Here, we’ve gathered just a few pictures of that time, so we may travel back and see if everything that shined really was gold.

Bette Davis and Leslie Howard on the Set

Bette Davis and Leslie Howard starred together in Warner Bros.’ 1936 adaptation of The Petrified Forest. Howard played Alan Squier, while Davis portrayed Gabrielle Maple. The film also featured Humphrey Bogart in his breakthrough performance as Duke Mantee.

Anna May Wong Faces Warner Oland

Anna May Wong and Warner Oland appeared together in Paramount’s 1931 mystery Daughter of the Dragon. Wong played Princess Ling Moy, while Oland played Fu Manchu, continuing the studio’s fascination with exoticized Asian characters and elaborate crime stories.

Cagney Before the Stardom
