New Yu Yu Hakusho OVA Coming 2018

The classic 90’s shonen series will be getting a new animated special.

Yu Yu Hakusho, the trendsetting anime that solidified everyone’s love of tournament arcs, is coming back. Announced at Jump Festa 2018 and reported by Anime News Network, the series’ 25th anniversary Blu-Ray box set will include a brand new OVA..

Now we know, thanks to Anime News Network, that the OVA will adapt two stories. First, the “Two Shots” bonus chapter from the seventh manga volume which told the story of how Kurama and Hiei met. Second, the manga’s penultimate chapter “All or Nothing, featuring the main characters reuniting to solve a hostage crisis in the spirit world. We’ve got a key visual for “Two Shots” below.

The OVA will also see the return of the original Japanese voice cast as well.

Created by Yoshihiro Togashi, also known for Hunter X Hunter, Yu Yu Hakusho ran from 1992 to 1995 with 112 epsiodes. The series follows the 14-year-old delinquent Yusuke Urameshi, who dies after saving a child in a car accident. The Spirit World is surprised by his death and offers him a chance to come back as a “spirit detective” who is tasked with defeating demons.

Along the way he teams up with the human punk Kuwabara, the extra as hell demon Hiei, and the smooth yet tortured Kurama. Often imitated but never replicated, Yu Yu Hakusho succeeded because not only did it feature kickin’ action but memorable characters.

While the news of this new OVA is early we can only hope the original English voice cast will return. They did so well in their roles (especially for a dub in the early 2000’s) that it’d be a shame not to let them return.
