How To Train Your Dragon 3 Will End the Franchise

Prepare for things to get weepy in the last part of the Dreamworks saga

Director Dean DeBlois has confirmed that How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will be the last in the series. Speaking at the Toronto Film Festival, where he introduced a set of clips from the new film, DeBlois also said that fans should be prepared for things to get emotional.

“We thought about it for a long time and came up with what we think is a bittersweet way to say goodbye to these characters, but the right way,” he told the audience (via Entertainment Weekly). “The film is about letting go, or finding the wisdom to let go, rather”. In other words, the film is probably going to feature a scene where Hiccup has to say goodbye to Toothless and everyone is going to come out crying.

The How To Train Your Dragon franchise started back in 2010 – at the time signaling a big departure for Dreamworks away from celeb-heavy comedies like Shrek and Madagascar, and towards something with a bit more Pixar heft. Based on the 16-book series by Cressida Cowell, there was talk at the time of Dreamworks turning the film into five or six part franchise – but the studio eventually opted for three films and one TV series.
