Spider-Man: Far From Home is almost here! Here's everything you need to know, from trailer to release date to cast details.

Marvel Studios and Sony wasted no time in locking in a sequel for Spider-Man: Homecoming, first announcing it back in December 2016, right after the earliest teaser was released. Jon Watts returns as director. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is known as Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spidey will spend some time outside of NYC in this one, so let’s get into everything we know so far…

Spider-Man 2 Release Date

Spider-Man: Far From Home has seen its release date move up three days, to July 2, 2019. The full schedule of upcoming Marvel movies can be found here.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Review

While the official review embargo doesn’t lift until next week, reactions have started to come in via social media. Here’s some of our own…

Spider-Man: Far from Home Poster

A trio of new Spider-Man: Far from Home international posters showcase the locations from Peter Parker’s inevitably-eventful European vacation. You can check them out embedded directly below.

Below is the first official poster for the film.

Spider-Man 2 Cast

Tom Holland and Marissa Tomei will return as Peter Parker and Aunt May, and Jacob Batalon to return as Ned Leeds, as well. Jake Gyllenhaal will be here as Mysterio, too. We have more info on that right here. Zendaya is also returning as MJ (Michelle, not Mary Jane).

JB Smoove will play “a lead in the ensemble” according to Deadline. No other details are available, but all I can say right now is…please let him be J. Jonah Jameson.

And as for other returning characters, well, we’ll just let the man himself tell you…

In other words, Samuel L. Jackson is in the movie as Nick Fury, and Cobie Smulders is also returning as Maria Hill! Regardless of the events at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, it’s safe to say that certain other things will be back to normal after Avengers: Endgame and before Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Spider-Man 2 Villain

While there will probably be more than one villain involved, we do know that Gyllenhaal is on board as Quentin Beck, known as Mysterio. Beck is a disgraced Hollywood stuntman and special effects guru who turns to crime. We have a lot more info on who Mysterio is right here.

This actually brings some intriguing new elements to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we outlined some of those possibilities right here.

Numan Acar (12 StrongPrison BreakHomeland) has also joined the cast of Spider-Man: Far from Homereports Deadline.

The only thing revealed about Acar’s role is that he will play a character named “Dimitri.” However, purely for the sake of context, the name “Dimitri” in the annals of Marvel Comics has referred to a few characters. The obvious choice is the Spider-Man-pertinent character of Dmitri Smerdyakov, a.k.a. The Chameleon, the scheming master of disguise, who also happens to be Spidey’s first proper supervillain, first appearing in solo series launch issue The Amazing Spider-Man #1 back in 1963.

However, in the spirit of getting obscure, there’s also Dimitri Bukharin, an updated version of Iron Man villain Crimson Dynamo, a character whose original version manifested in Iron Man 2 as Mickey Rourke’s Ivan Vanko, an amalgamation of Crimson Dynamo and villain Whiplash. Second, there’s Dimitri Smirkov, a.k.a. M.O.D.O.T., an alternate version of the giant-headed hoverchair-rocking villain, M.O.D.O.K.

…Just throwing that out there. Read nothing into any of it. Considering the new franchise’s affinity for Ditko-era Spidey villains, Chameleon seems like the most likely choice.

Spider-Man 2 Story

“I think the storyline is fairly impacted by the locations we go to,” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told us in 2018. “We love the notion of taking Spider-Man to places around the world that we haven’t seen him in before. And we have a villain who I think will play into that nicely.”

That “places around the world” quote makes us feel that maybe Peter feels he needs to find himself after seeing things he never expected to see in Avengers: Infinity War. It would make sense that once you encounter aliens (and more), it’s not enough to be just a “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” anymore. A school trip is one way to take care of that.

Anyway, now that Spider-Man: Far From Home title makes a lot more sense, doesn’t it?

Spider-Man 2 Characters

There are reports that Spidey will cross paths with a European “femme fatale” type character, as well. Could this be the MCU version of Felicia Hardy? Maybe Silver Sable?

We’ll update this as more information becomes more available.
