Meet the new faces of Game Of Thrones season 4

As another actor is added to Game Of Thrones' fourth season, we tot up the new faces coming to Westeros next year...

Dutch actor and musician, Michiel Huisman, best recognised (in the US and UK at least) for his roles in Treme and Nashville, is the latest of a clutch of actors to join Game of Thrones‘ fourth season. Huisman is another whose character name is being kept under wraps for now.

A good handful of newcomers to Westeros has been announced over the past months, so we thought it was time we herded them all up into the one pen. As new cast members are confirmed, we’ll add them to this growing list.

Michiel Huisman as ?

First up then, is Huisman, who’s returning to HBO after his time as an addict musician in David Simon and Eric Overmyer’s Treme. More widely seen is ABC’s music series Nashville, in which Huisman plays producer Liam McGuinnis.

What do we think then? A Kettleblack? A Greyjoy? Another Martell perhaps?

Joseph Gatt as Styr, Magnar of Thenn

BansheeStar Trek Into Darkness and Thor have all welcomed the talents and otherworldly appearance of Joseph Gatt, who seems born to play fierce Wildling chief Styr in Game of Thrones season four. One of Mance Rayder’s lieutenants, Styr is the Magnar, or Lord, of the Thenn people from the inhospitable Frostfangs.

Roger Ashton-Griffiths as Mace Tyrell

The titular head of the rising-in-power Tyrell family, Mace is regarded as something of a useless lump by his mother Lady Olenna, the real matriarch of the family. One thing’s certain then, Roger Ashton-Griffiths, whom UK TV-watching audiences will recognise for a plethora of roles, including his recent appearance in The Tudors, will be sharing screen time with Dame Diana Rigg.

Ashton-Griffiths’ character is the father to Ser Loras and Margaery Tyrell, played by Finn Jones and his The Tudors co-star, Natalie Dormer.

Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand

Luther fans will need no reminder as to who Indira Varma is (and indeed, should Neil Cross’ prequel movie come off, we should be seeing her again as the wife of Idris Elba’s character, Zoe). The versatile actress is currently appearing in BBC murder mystery What Remains, and was recently seen in Hunted and Silk in the UK, though is perhaps still best known around the world for her role as Niobe in HBO’s Rome.

Returning to HBO, Varma is to play Ellaria Sand, who in the books is the mother of the four youngest Sand Snakes (don’t be concerned, it’s a nickname), and lover of Prince Oberyn Martell.

Mark Gatiss as ?

When we were lucky enough to chat to Mark Gatiss earlier this year, he confessed that he hadn’t yet seen Game of Thrones. We wonder if that’s been rectified now that he’s going to appear in season four in an as-yet undisclosed role?

Gatiss’ casting last month sent the geek world aflutter, though his character remains a mystery. There are plenty of later roles from George R.R. Martin’s novels that would suit him – The Kindly Man, a clutch of Greyjoys, a Martell – but is it too early for those? Now that Mace Tyrell is off the table, it’s anyone’s guess…

Pedro Pascal as Prince Oberyn Martell, The Red Viper

The Good Wife‘s Pedro Pascal was the first newcomer to be confirmed for season four, and he seems a fine choice to play the “forceful, lusty man with a quick wit and a barbed tongue”, as his character is described in the novels. Salty Dornishman Prince Oberyn comes to King’s Landing with revenge on his mind in Martin’s A Song Of Ice And Fire series.
