I found this site after recalling about this programme - which terrified me too as a child. No one I've talked to seemes to remember it, whereas I've never forgotten it! I've just watched the 'Memories of' on UTube with my 22 yr old daughter, who cannot understand what was so scary about it. Things have changed, but my memories have not!!

I used to be absolutely terrified of this as a kid too.
I am now 40 with 2 small kids of my own and my sister had the dvd bought for her this xmas.
I have sat down with my kids and watched it numerous times....Now I can't see what all the fuss was about. I actually find it quite endearing, and my kids love it...
Therefore may I suggest you too get a copy and sit down to watch it, it will be money worth spent if it cures you of this fear you still have.

I have been trying to find out what this programme was that I have such vivid memories about. I thought it might be a version of Beauty and the Beast but now I know the truth. Visually I can remember it, the dwarf, the bridge over the stream, the garden that freezes over (?), the bear man etc but no idea what the story was. Thanks. P.s If it is any consolation I used to have nightmares about 'The Goons' on tv. Still don't know why.

i remember that awful fish. can't believe there were only 3 episodes, it seemed to go on forever. i'd love to watch it again but it might spoil the memory of terror.

i'm so glad it wasn't just me and that i hadn't made it up!!! I remember watching this in the seventies and when i tell people they think i'm either mad or have a vivid imagination- i mean how scary can a animated film called the ' Singing ringing tree' be? The hardest ones to convince are my nephews and nieces who obviously think that I'm a complete wimp- is there any way to get hold of this film (original version) so i can scare the crap out of them!!!!

in colour it looks much better, i liked it, felt very sorry for the bear, I agree he was very nasty . But you are right the whole thing just sits in your mind and i do find myself always looking for something that will connect with it. feels like a bad nightmare that you could not wake from . I remember crying for hours when the princes was turned into the Bear. Think I'm going to have to face my demons one day and sit through it again.

Terrified me too. The fish was frightening for some reason, not to mention the dwarf and bear. Psychologically damaging film in my opinion.

I am totally with you on the terrifying presence that was the 'singing ringing tree'. It has haunted yet fascinated me for over 40 years! thought I was the only one who was traumatised by it- thank god I'm not alone!

I am soooo with you! My sister and I came to talk about it and remembered the supressed fear! We are having an evening [early Halloween???] tonight watching the DVD!! I think we will eat before it as I am sure it will put us off our food with fear once we see it! If you hear any screams ~ it will be us!

omg, don't know why I googled this programme, couldn't even remember the name, all I could remember was the bear and the cave and how bloody scary it was. Must have been about 6 or 7. The minute I saw the name on google it brought the memories flooding back, thank god it wasn't just me lol.

I recall three dogs in a cave one little one guarding a chest with bronze coins in it, a bigger dog guarding silver coins and a great big black dog guarding a chest full of gold coins, I think it was the singing ringing tree - - or did I imagine it ??
