Torchwood set for the US

Cameron K McEwan

In news that might be a surprise for many, Torchwood is being tooled up for a stateside version of the Doctor Who spin-off.

Published on Jan 19, 2010

The Hollywoood Reporter today has revealed that Fox, in conjunction with BBC Worldwide, is 'developing' Torchwood for US production. Heading the team for the BBC are the successful triumverate of Jane Tranter (she helped bring back Doctor Who in the Noughties), Julie Gardner (former producer) and ex-showrunner Russell T Davies.

Davies is scripting and, at the moment, it is not clear whether or not any of the original cast will be starring or when shooting will begin. It is also unclear if this is a 'reboot' or a continuation of the franchise (or if the show will continue production in the UK).

Torchwood has built an impressive fanbase both in the UK and in the US, having broke records for BBC America when Children Of Earth aired last summer.

If this is the 'Torchwood Series 4' Davies was on about a couple of months ago then I'm not impressed.

Epic Fail - this cannot work in any way, shape or form, it will be far too slick *sigh*

Hopefully this means that they will be telling the stories of a US based branch of Torchwood with tie ins with the BBC's version and Dr Who. Otherwise someone is gonna get hurt!

Pretty cool! Will be very interested in this. I must be one of the only few people that'd like to see a US version of Who. Start it where the 2005 version starts. If it doesn't harm the UK one, what'd be the problem?

I wouldn't want to see a US version of Who, it would be shit. Nevermind the fact it would cause all sorts of problems within the Whoniverse. US version of Torchwood however could fit straight into the Whoniverse, and it wouldn't matter if they americanised the show (actually I would prefer it if they did).

As long as Barrowman as Captain Jack is in it, I'm fine with that. Somehow it would even make sense - storywise - for the Torchwood-team to turn their back on the UK... the government wasn't very supportive during the events of Children of Earth...

Ladies and Gents. I give you Fox's replacement for "Fringe" in their ever revolving door of sci-fi shows that last 2 seasons (or less) just so they can say they have one on the schedule.

Since Torchwood was set up by Queen Victoria how the hell can it be in the US?

Caffman, that's a really good point! Re: US Who.. wouldn't you like to see it? I mean, it's a show that'd attract some real good talent for sure. I can imagine some good classy writers coming on board for it and diretors too. If Ghondry can do stuff like Conchords, surely they can entice him with Who? Imagine the special guests in it! Imagine the CGI! The big problem would be scheduling it. SyFy is aboslutely the wrong place. I'd vote for Fox, on before the Simpsons.

And don't for one minute that RTD isn't pitching it right now.

Why not do a US version of Doctor Who? Because that really worked well in 1996 didn't it. Seriously, if it ever happens I will go postal. The Doctor is a quintessentially British character who would be lost, nay, destroyed in translation. Torchwood, fine. It would work better in the US anyway. A US Torchwood/Who crossover? Fine, just to set up the show or whatnot. A US VERSION of Who? Out of the question, surely. Surely.

US Who would be terrible unless it had British pretty much everything.... I am sure that it was mentioned that TW had offices abroad, if not it can easily written into the back story. That way it wouldn't be a problem, no doubt either Tenant or the new guy, along with Barrowman could be brought over for a setup story to place it. That way we could have a US take on TW which I think could be really cool with the right writers and cast. Yes FOX would be great, but I wouldn't trust them not to interfere and ruin it so give it to somewhere that would trust its talent.

"I must be one of the only few people that'd like to see a US version of Who. If it doesn't harm the UK one, what'd be the problem?" It's no surprise your username is interfearance. However dumb it would be to have Torchwood Cardiff to move to the US, A US base for torchwood actually makes sense. However, I wouldn't want it to take over from the current UK version. For one, Barrowman's Americanised accent wouldn't work well in America, but it does work well in Wales. Two, you can leave Gwen there, you'd have to take her with you, B! However, Marsters could make a welcome return. It could be an interesting idea... as long as fox don't air it on a bloody friday.

Sounds quite cool actually. If it's anything like the US version of Life on Mars then it should be pretty good. Would work best as season set in the US rather than a US reboot. Another 5 parter for BBC1 would be fine by me. John Barrowman has an "american" accent anyway. Seems to make perfect sense given RTD and co are now stateside. But please no US Who! The McGann TV movie was okay but nothing special and the Daleks in Manhattan episodes of series three proved we can't really do American period pieces that well... Doctor Who is British and works best as such IMHO ;o)

Torchwood US? I don't feel so good. I think I will have a good lie down until this passes. We will all wake up in the morning and have a good laugh about it. Remember when we thought there was gonna be a Torchwood US?

All I can say is why? surely Torchwod is just the UK version of The X-Files so what we would have is the US version of the UK version of the Original X-Files???

Why can't the US just create a new show, inspired by the setup of Torchwood - There is already a Torchwood, if the Americans enjoy it so much, then they can keep watching the one that is currently being made in the UK.

While I'm not initially opposed to the idea they would have to do a lot of retro fitting if the show was relocated to the Western Hemisphere; Torchwood are after all employees of the crown. However I watch the show for Eve Myles performance & I can only just about stand Jon Barrowman with her in it. If she was removed in the US version then I wouldn't have any reason to tune in.

Does anyone recall The Omega Factor from 1979? Louise Jameson and James Hazeldine starred in what, arguably, could be described as a "British X Files" predating the US show by some 15 years or so... The US doen't always have a monopoly on creating certain genres. The Omega Factor is just out on DVD, check it out... ;o)

We are lucky no one thought of mixing those two shows, otherwise we could have had an SF series called The X Factor!?? Sorry! ;o)

Stupid stories, unbelievable character, abysmal writing, this sounds like it would fit in perfectly with most of American TV! My only hope is that if these two shows could be brought together then they would surely obliterate each other in a fireball of unspeakable dross, the like of which the world has never seen. And while I’m at it, if this explosion could destroy RTD’s passport so he could come back to the UK so much the better!

'could NOT come back...' is what I meant. Damn this blind rage I get into when I think of Torchwood!
