Stargate Universe episode 9 review

Carl England

This week's episode of Stargate Universe has a lot to live up to, considering last week's stellar installment...

9. Life

Opening and closing with Flogging Molly's Worse Day Since Yesterday really sets the tone for the episode, as it focuses heavily on the dramatic side of things. While the song plays, a montage runs, showing various people across the ship dealing with their life aboard Destiny. Some are dealing with it quite well, while others are beginning to stress out.

The montage includes Chloe and Lt Scott adjusting quite well, and Josh Blacker's Sgt Spencer starts to seem like more of a threat than previously hinted at after he runs out of pills.

While medic Johanson holds psychiatric evaluations of the crew, we see Ming-Na's Camile and Brian J Smith's Lt Scott head back to Earth for a visit. While Camile treats it as a quick trip home to see her partner, Lt Scott doesn't quite get that chance, as a letter from his ex gives him a more important motive.

And on the sci-fi side of things, we have a rather nifty little story involving a new section of ship being opened up. A beta version of the ancient repository of information is found, and Dr Rush tries to manoeuvre Col Young into letting a member of the crew have all the information downloaded into his head. Needless to say, Col Young is not willing to let him have anyone sit in the chair, as General O'Neil nearly died when he did it, and so the tension builds further than before.

It's safe to say that if you don't like the emotional drama side of SGU you probably won't like this episode, as it features some of the most heavily dramatic scenes yet, and rightly so, considering the storylines that come to a head here.

Most storylines are pulled off well, with a great deal of emotional wealth ploughed out of them, with Brian J Smith getting a lot of weight put on his shoulders, and dealing with it quite robustly.

However, some of the storylines seem a little overly drained of any emotional strength and seem weak in comparison.

For instance, Ming-Na overplays her part in her story, and Col Young's trip home seems a bit over-dramatic and unrational, which adds confusion to an earlier storyline in the episode where he plays the exact opposite of that character. However, these are small issues in an overall well played out episode and the remainder of the 40 minutes are played out in a considerably strong manner.

What we do get to see in this mostly action-less episode is a lot more of the ship and its impeccable design. Whether it's the interior corridor design, shots of the ancient dials and screens, or some beautiful exterior shots, everything looks incredibly well planned and not a detail has gone amiss, with the final shot of the episode giving a closer look at the exterior.

It's shots like that that look like a field day for the FX team, and they never seem to miss a beat, so it's always good to see them on top form.

This episode of SGU does seem like a step backwards for a series that was having its best output this time last week, but I can only hope that it is a short-term lapse and that we will be back on form before long.

I love the way Young is played, how he is able to show extreme restraint (after being prevented from punching Telford he is put immediately into a confrontation with Rush - and he doesn't transfer that anger and punch Rush) but then lets himself go and lies about being Dr Volker so he can get within arms reach of Telford and do it right!

Didnt mind episode - i realize they are in for the long haul...but...it seemed out of character for Rush not wanting to sit in the chair. His strength is the knowledge of the ancients and figuring out the ship. If someone else gets the info - he will be number 2 - why would he want that? It would make him useless. even last week he was pointing out how he wanted to figure out life after death - maybe the chair would help.

Please could someone let me know if I am the only person who believed that episode 8 (which was a very good episode) was left in such a way that we were expected to accept that Chloe was dead? Or did I miss something? I expected to see some sort of explanation or continuation of this situation, from the end of episode 8, at the start of episode 9, but absolutely nothing was mentioned and in fact there was Chloe apparently fit, healthy and alive(!) in the first few scenes doing yoga??! Please could somebody enlighten me if possible??? thx

Loopy, it seemed to me that the producers were letting us fill in the blanks. The widget with the new message was sent back in order that quick and effective action could be taken to ensure that everyone got the conveniently effective venom cure for the disease picked up on the ice planet.

Dunno what to tell you Loopy. I personally loved that ending. It was superb! Definitely one of the best bits of telly all year.

And I quote "Opening and closing with Flogging Molly's Worse Day Since Yesterday really sets the tone for the episode"

@Loopy - I must admit I was sorta expecting this episode to be a carry over from last week, but am pleasantly surprised it wasn't. I really like the fact that the show actually made me as a viewer finish the jigsaw puzzle rather than spoon feeding us the entire thing as lots of US TV does (and something that SG and SG:A often do). I would have to say this is probably my favourite episode of the show so far, getting inside the heads of the characters makes them far more 'real' and believable!

I'm hearing a lot of complaints from people I know who are SG fans that this show just isn't 'sciencey' enough! Personally, I like the fact that it focuses on the people and the drama arising out of the setting rather than having to come up with a tired gimmick every week.

I think this is the best depiction of a gay relationship I'd seen on television for a long time. This was the third or forth time we'd seen a member of the cast go 'home' and, although each relationship is different, this one was actually the first time we'd seen a proper loving relationship. We'd had man and estranged wife. Son and mother with HIV (which was ground-breaking in itself come to think of it. Last week, when the son thought he was about to die he opened up about his mother's illness. He's the 'normal guy' who's recruited as he's a computer geek. He helped out the military as they promised decent healthcare for his mum...) Man and 'ex' who's had a baby unbenownst to man... Mum and daughter, who has to explain that Dad's died on the ship. Yeah, thinking about it, the first 'normal' relationship between two people happen to be a gay lesbian couple. Who have dinner, drink wine, relax ineach other's company, gently rib each other about the 'ugly' chair that one insists on keeping in the house. Laugh. Kiss. And cry. It was tender, loving, funny, homely and ultimately heartbreaking as you remembered this reunion was temporary - and these two people who seemed truly, deeply soulmates - had to say goodbye, knowing one of them was so far away, constantly unsure of survival from one day to the next. I hadn't seen this before. This is the first Stargate I've got into. It's more character focussed and all the better for it.

I just started catching up on the episodes and I was very shocked or maybe saw something that wasn't what I thought. At the end during the montage they showed Chloe with at first glance I thought was Scott, but seemed more like Greer. Then they showed Scott in the shuttle by himself. If I saw that correctly I am surprised no one on any boards I have read has posted anything about that. Then again maybe I did see wrong. Please let me know if it was Chloe and Greer, or maybe Greer and someone else. I don't see how it could have been Scott seeing how he was in the shuttle. Thanks.
