In the flurry of news activity yesterday as the new series of Doctor Who finally started going before the cameras, some details about his new assistant were also revealed. Played by Karen Gillan, the Doctor's new travelling companion is going by the name of Amy Pond.

The BBC hasn't, as you'd expect, stumped up too many details about her as of yet, so we're unsure whether she'll be followed by the now de rigueur collection of family hangers-on. But we find ourselves agreeing with The Guardian, in that her look seems to be influenced by that of Press Gang's Lynda Day.

We suspect the news snippets are going to keep on going now that the Doctor is back before the cameras. And there's still the small matter of a trio of special episodes for David Tennant to come before the year is out...
