Doctor Who: Jessica Hynes Returns

Cameron K McEwan

News from filming tells us that David Tennant's finale will see a friendly face and a familiar book return.

Published on Mar 21, 2009

Filming on the Doctor Who specials continues with even more intrigue being thrown into the mix by the production team. Spotted on set today, in a scene set in a contemporary bookstore, was Jessica Hynes.

The Spaced actress previously appeared in the Human Nature two~parter in 2007 as Joan Redfern. In this story John Smith revealed his parents names were Sydney and Verity - a reference to two of the creators of Doctor Who, Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert. Jessica's character's name appears to take elements from them too as her name is Verity Newman.

In a further nod to the Paul Cornell classic, Jessica's character is seen signing a book entitled A Journal Of Impossible Things - the cover of which features a fob watch. Directing these scenes was Euros Lyn, which would indicate that this is the two part finale that will see the end to David Tennant's time as the Time Lord due to start broadcasting later this year.

Way to spoil our enjoyment without warning. A huge animated banner with no spoiler warning? Are you guys for real? Idiots.

How, exactly, did they spoil anything?

I'm assuming you're joking.

I did have a think about whether this news would constitute a 'spoiler' before posting it. At the end of the day, I decided that it's casting news, revealing nothing about what really happens in the episode. I don't think it's reasonable to expect us to keep a piece of information so general in the 'spoilers' category. - Martin

I would argue it reveals a great deal. Fair enough it was the casting of an actor who hasn't appeared previously in such a key role in the series - like Lee Evans for example.

Soso. Really, you wont know how much of a spoiler it is until you see it. Which means it isn't much of a spoiler.

All we know is that Jessica Hynes is playing a character, and she'll be signing a book. (Which suggests she'll be playing an author.) As spoilers go that is pretty minor.

Agreed, monkey should just relax. Can't wait for the Specials.

Monkeybaby, my question's operative was 'exactly', and you haven't answered it. You just argue 'it reveals a great deal' without backing that up. I guess the 'I woud' is just a figure of speech. The only thing the news tells me is that an actress has been cast in a role; the actress having appeared before in another story in the same show. Even if I now start speculating widly - and it had to be wildly, that is without any facts to back up my notions - Den of Geek did not spoil anything. Unless one did not want to know if the ensuing special would have been animation or real actors ... Here's something for you: Dr Who is a Scifi show!

Okay, not an actual spoiler per se but it does set the imagination going for the intrepid Whovian. One might have said on the homepage "Huge return for series three guest star may reveal details to regeneration, Doctor 11." I dunno, it does indeed get my imagination in motion, obviously.

Monkeybaby: Are you gonna ring up the BBC and scream 'spoilers' when she turns up in all the ads, which she will - probably at the end of the easter special? Seriously dude, get a proper definition of the word!

Woah, have I pressed the wrong buttons or what?! My point was valid - as other sites who are reporting this news with a spoiler warning obvously agree (SFX called it a 'massive' spoiler). Mention of Jessica Hynes and Journal of Impossible Things in the same episode, is adequate enough for even a polite spoiler warning in my book. What's concerning is statements like 'monkeybaby needs to back off', and 'are you gonna ring up the bbc and scream...'. Who exactly is over-reacting here? And thank you for at least a modicum of understanding, IAmATVJunkie.
