Heroes: writers and executive producers fired

Simon Brew

The murmurings of discontent with Heroes season three extend to its makers...

Published on Nov 3, 2008

The third season of Heroes hasn’t quite been the return to form that many of us at Den Of Geek were hoping for, with the show at times collapsing under the sheer weight of characters, subplots and powers. And it seems that we’re not alone in our thoughts.

As ratings for season three have underwhelmed, and with the show apparently also going over its allotted budget, NBC has apparently stepped in, and changes have been made. The network is believed to be unhappy with the direction that the show has been taken, and as a result, Jesse Alexander and Jeph Loeb have been sacked from their roles as co-executive producers and writers.

The pair had been with Heroes since the first season, and their departure switches the onus firmly onto Tim Kring to turn the show around. While it’s still expected that a fourth season will follow, right now it’s fair to say that the first seeds of doubt have been sown…

Yikes. Well then. Allegedly Loeb'd been leaving for family issues (his son sadly passed away a couple of years back) but this really... hmm. Not quite sure what to think...

Heroes season one was so hyped that nothing could actually live up to it. I'm actually enjoying season 3 as much as I was season one & more than I did the early part of season 2 but hey all in all its really just 4400 done again...

I like this season better than last, but the series' main problems (huge leaps of internal logic, character inconsistency, lack of cohesiveness and no real overall narrative game plan, remain. I think the series wasn't intended to run quite as long as it did and not in this format (initial thoughts were to have a rotating cast)and the creators didn't quite know what to do with the show's incredible first season success. I think it may be too late to really turn the show around (huge drops in ratings over a two year period are pretty tough to fight) but I'd take a risk and have the heroes form a kind of league. No costumes, no codenames, just a group of people who are trying to help each other while helping the world and of course arguing about how best to do it. Subplots could include their dealing with daily life while leading the "hero" life at night. I know Kring said "never" but if done right it could be really original and interesting, and at this point, they don't have much to lose.
