The new Conan The Barbarian is chosen

Simon Brew

The reboot of the Conan movies has called for a helping hand from a Stargate Atlantis actor…

Published on Jan 22, 2010

It seems that America has been Conan-obsessed over the last week or two, as the row involving NBC, Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien appears to have soaked up headlines with abandon. For most of us outside the US, this is the more interesting Conan story, however (and a much cheaper one too!).

Remember the planned reboot/going back to basics/however they're selling this one of the Conan franchise? At one point linked to Brett Ratner, common sense has since prevailed, and Marcus Nispel instead landed the director's chair.

And now, it seems, the new Conan has been found. It's going to be Jason Momoa, who will be known primarily to fans of Stargate Atlantis. He's not a million miles away from Arnold Schwarzenegger, which, no doubt, had a lot of sway in the casting, and the new Conan film is now ready to shoot in March of this year.

Here's the full story at Deadline Hollywood.

Marcus Nispel and some douche from Stargate? It's a B-movie then. Great

he is not big enough Conan is meant to be massive, as a bit of a Conan fan (even my cat is named after him) i will be severely dissappointed if they don't make him bulk up to at least twice that size.

You are probably right about Momoa not being big enough. He's not exactly a great thespian either. However, he is excellent in fight scenes*, so its not all bad. I wouldn't want him to bulk up if it slows him down. (*yes, I watched SGA)

let´s start to feed him with kegs of whey protein. He has just 2 months to pump. Somebody have the Stallone dealer´s Phone?

I heard Jared Padelecki was in the running, he is certainly big enough. Not sure about this guy, never heard of him.

Conan was never that massive in the books! He was large and powerful, but the main thing was his 'panther-like grace' - Momoa's kapawara skills show that. So yes, he should maybe bulk up a bit, but to be honest, Arnie was far too big to really pull Conan off - he also lacked any grace, and/or charisma. Most other picks are too short, too old, or too damn ugly.

I also watched SGA, thought it was better than SG-1 when it was on. (I.e. better than seasons 8-10) Also agree that he's very agile and excellent in fights so no changes there!

The guy's a reasonable actor as far as I recall. He isn't built like Arnie, I'm sure he will bulk up a bit, but although Conan is portrayed as big his enemies generally need to be bigger so this will perhaps work out. Certainly not an expected piece of casting mind.

Epic fail!

I can support this; I enjoyed him on SG:A and he's got the whole sword and sandal fighting style down. And if Arnie could play Conan the first time around, they aren't exactly looking for an Oscar calibre performance. Lose the dreads though. Also, using two word sentences that start with 'epic' makes you an enormous douche.

Dude is 6'5 210 lbs. Conan, according to Howard, was 6'2 210 lbls.

Bodybuilders such as Arnie develop all their muscles to a degree that I don't think even a life as a Hyborian mercenary would develop them. (Christopher Reeve didn't have to develop them that far to look like Superman, and I hope the guy playing Thor doesn't.) And while Conan may not demand an Oscar-winning performance, it would be nice if the guy playing him could act, which Arnie couldn't at that stage of his career.

i think the majority of movie goers won't be a fan of the books and to be honest the beauty of Arnie playing Conan was that the whole thing was a bit Naf.I am going to reserve judgement for a bit if you lot say he was ok in SGA then i will wait and see, Rovb is right though lose the Dreds.

Not sure about the original books, but the classic 1970s comic version that i grew up reading (as drawn by Barry Smith) was lean and mean - not some hulking body-builder.
