Avatar: the first reviews

Simon Brew

Yesterday, many people in the world got to see James Cameron's Avatar. And many people really seemed to like it...

Published on Dec 11, 2009

Bah. We're banned from telling you what we think of both Avatar and Sherlock Holmes until early next week. But in the case of the former, some reviews have been starting to filter out, and the word is very, very good indeed. So here's a round of early reaction to James Cameron's ultra-expensive science fiction extravaganza...

The Guardian:

"So by saying Avatar was really much, much better than expected, that it looked amazing and that the story was gripping - if cheesy in many places - the Guardian is in technical breach of the agreement. It is not a breach, however, to report that other journalists leaving the screening were also positive: the terrible film that some had been anticipating had not materialised. It was good.", adding "There is, though, a certain amount of suspension of disbelief needed when watching Avatar."

The Hollywood Reporter:

"A dozen years later, James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world ... The only question is: How will Cameron ever top this?"

Variety:

"Twelve years after "Titanic," which still stands as the all-time B.O. champ, Cameron delivers again with a film of universal appeal that just about everyone who ever goes to the movies will need to see."

Screen International:

"It's an unprecedented marriage of technology and storytelling which is on the whole remarkably successful."

The Times:

"Avatar is an overwhelming, immersive spectacle. The state-of-the-art 3D technology draws us in, but it is the vivid weirdness of Cameron's luridly imagined tropical otherworld that keeps us fascinated."

The Sun:

"The Sneak still recalls sitting in a cinema 12 years ago watching awestruck as Titanic slipped beneath the Atlantic waves.

The Sneak's advice is to make sure you can say you were there when the future of cinema began."

Ed Douglas of Coming Soon over Twitter:

"I'll take my chances with Fox legal.... Avatar was amazing, I loved it!"

Alex Billington of First Showing over Twitter:

"James Cameron is a freakin' genius! I can't say much but wow, I loved it. Avatar was phenomenal, pretty much blew me away."

Chasewhale of GordonAndTheWhale over Twitter:

"Just finished AVATAR. Special effects were top notch. The movie ran a little long for my likings but I liked it!"

Given that Fox legal has already sent us one letter about Avatar, we're playing by the embargo, sadly. Unless you happen to get us very inebriated in a pub, or the review embargo is officially lifted. But expect our full review of this, and of Sherlock Holmes, next week at the very latest...

"We're banned from telling you what we think of both Avatar and Sherlock Holmes" Can you tell us about any of the trailers before the previews or about the copyright notice and the BBFC rating board withuot talking about the film?

If anything these great reviews are making me feel more optimistic about tonight's screening. Cause up until today I have been very very reserved in terms of what to expect. Even the footage they showed us in the summer did nothing to convince me. And im worried about story here! But we'll see! :-)

Agreed. All 170 min films can be whirled down to a single line because you have seen a trailer. Why bother watching films when u can get a very loose idea of plot from a trailer? Man, you are so awesome - you must save so much money not having to pay to see stuff. Will you be my new dad? You are a cool dude with such blisteringly accurate conjectures. Lets not listen to the universally positive reviews, because you've already seen the trailer and south park took the piss. Dude, I have a man crush on you cos you are so great...

Of course the reviews are positive-- these publications signed an agreement not to discuss the film. Fox would never sue or attack a publication giving them good press, so the people who liked the film are talking about it now and the people who hated it are waiting until they're allowed to. Expect a wave of bashing to occur next week from those who have been forced to hold their tongues. Oh yeah, and another thing-- film industry people need this movie to succeed because it was so expensive to make that in this economy, having it bomb would be disastrous for Hollywood. When the jobs of the people in the industry (and the survival of a major film studio) depend so heavily on a $500 million investment, you'd better believe everyone in the industry will talk it up until they're blue in the face. I've never been as distrusting of reviews as I am about those for this film.

Man I want this movie to be good, but I have to remember, Phantom Menace got mostly positive reviews as well, as did Indy 4. Reviewers are often less critical than geeks.

I seem to remember Phantom Menace getting universally mauled by critics (led by Harry Knowles). Why anyone would want to see a film where they don't trust universally positive reviews is beyond me. If you like the look, sure get excited and go see it. If you don't like the look of it, shut the fuck up, move on and go pay to see Nativity! instead.

TPM and Indiana Jones 4 had good reviews? Like, in the shadow universe? This movie seems to have blown everyone who's seen it away. They all say the same thing, though. The story is lacking, but overall a great cinematic experience. That's the mindset I'm going with, too.

benheck: What fucking bizarro universe did Phantom Menace and Indy 4 get good reviews? Not in the one I live in. The reviews are in. They are great. Get ready to be blown away.
