Your thoughts on Doctor Who: The Waters Of Mars

Den Of Geek readers

We’ve had our say on Doctor Who: The Waters Of Mars. Here’s what you’ve all been saying about it…

Published on Nov 16, 2009

It's fair to say that the reception that last night's Doctor Who episode, The Waters Of Mars, was far warmer than that laid out for the last special episode, Planet Of The Dead. You can read our full review of The Waters Of Mars here, but here's a selection of your feedback pooled from the comments at the end of the review, and the Den Of Geek Twitter feed (which you can find here)...

From The Comments:

"The final half of that show was pretty much the best I've ever seen Doctor Who be. A complete tour de force from all involved" - varoh

"I'm by no means a massive Who fan but that was quite simply one of the finest episodes of any series I've seen this year. Tennant was brilliant and that final twenty minutes or so was electrifying" - moakle

"A very dark episode, I loved it. what got me most excited though was the clip of the next ep - John Simm is back as the Master! My all-time favourite incarnation of The Doctor's arch-enemy! I can't wait!" - mrs_saxon (Mrs Saxon? I think we should be told...)

"When the Doctor started losing his grip on his sanity, almost, I was on the edge of my seat. David Tennant has proven time and time again that he is worthy of taking up the mantle that the previous incarnations have left him. Bravo to the Doctor Who team; what a brilliant episode!" - Jetterz123

"I can't believe all this laudatory stuff about the Waters of Mars. I thought it was one of the most dumbed-down Dr episodes in the new series, with lumbering cod philosophical questions, pedestrian pace, an excess of pointless noise and babble, laboured dilemmas... we had to struggle through an hour of D-movie scriptwriting for a crisis point in the end ten minutes? Jeez, I could have done something useful like washed my hair." - fooki

"A good base under siege story, strengthened by one of Tennant's best performances and a very brave move in making the Doctor look quite so hardline at the end. The Doctor seems to have 'seen the light' already about his bout of meglomania, but the damage has already been done. It's not so much nothing he can do...more like nothing he SHOULD do." - DamonD

" To be honest, I was terrified. Not of the monsters, of the doctor. It's really the most terrifying he's been in this and this was all I'd known of Tennant before his Doctor stint as he did a itv drama and was a serial killer or something, and he scared the living shit out of me. That's the first time he's done it in doctor who, and damn, it was amazingly effective. That being said, I do wish we had some more fun times with Tennant, rather than just a pure black hole of terror to come." - stuxmusic

And From Twitter:

"Not a massive fan of ‘Who' but I'm glad my graphics card died to allow me to watch it. Was pretty good" - KevinPocock

"A nice episode in itself. It can only benefit from the longer arc that is The End Of Time. Questions of morality are always welcome" - Sarxos

"And how close does the Doctor come to being the Master with that Time Lord Victorious speech? Things are no longer black and white" - Sarxos

"Now THAT's what I'm talking about. More of it. Intelligent, brave and fun. Much better than Monster Of The Week crap" - mrmarkreed

"I loved it! It was a brilliant episode and I love that they've shown what the Doctor is like without a companion to stop him" - TheBaron

"Waters Of Mars was AMAZING! David Tennant is perfect, he should be the Doctor forever" - Claire_Louize

"One DARK ep of Dr Who tonight. Bodes well for the Christmas specials will miss Tennant best doctor ever methinks alongside Baker" - Kemocs

" Waters of Mars was good but the final 10 minutes was stunning. End of Time can't come soon enough. Tennant was fantastic!" - hardluck_hotel

"That.. was.. awesome" - Dutchface

Thanks for all your comments, and sorry we can't feature more of them! Roll on Christmas seems to be the consensus...

"The Laws of Time are MINE. And they will OBEY ME!" Tennant just out-Mastered the Master.

Couldn't agree more Damon! Hopefully they will give Simm some stuff like this to play, rather than the outright raving bonkers Master he was saddled with in Last Of The Time Lords. Tennant was, as ever, SUPERB in this episode. Owns the role like no Doctor since Tom Baker. Very sad to see him go.

Tennant does Dark & Obsessive really well which makes me look forward to seeing his Hamlet - apparently being broadcast on Xmas Day!

Very disjointed, I thought. The editing was sluggish in parts and the "scariest episode ever TM" never materialised (ha!). The last 20 minutes were intereting, but really did seem to come out of nowhere. Still, the next 2 eps should give it some context.

That moment when the Doctor loses his sanity (the hint coming when he starts banging his head on the wall and talking to himself) is some of the best acting I've ever seen from any actor. David Tennant manages to go from jovial to insane and megalomaniac in the snap of a finger and he is convincingly scary. Excellent episode. I am going to miss his Doctor

This episode didn't really live up to the hype and expectation. These last few specials really needed to be on top form to give DT a good send off. Unfortunately, it encapsulated all the good points and bad points of RTD's run on the show. Basically we had the doctor as an observer for most of the episode and it was only when he took charge that it came to life. I'm dialling down my expectations for the final specials.

"The Daleks have mothership up there capable of cracking this planet in two like an egg... But even they, ruthless though they are, would think twice before doing such fundamental damage to the timeline" Who ever thought that we'd ever see that put so fully to the test!? Never mind out-mastering the Master... That flashback of that Dalek in Adelaide's childhood powering up to destroy her before thinking better of it when it seemingly scans her and works out who she is was quite the most chilling thing I have ever seen in Who. A real "Oh, FUCK..." moment, which really serves to only magnify the horror of what has to be done and yet goes undone...quite how Adeleide's corspe and Gadget ended up on Earth will completely shatter the human race's view of the rest of the universe the way things were supposed to happen. And that's just ignoring the extra two people who are in the world who don't belong there any more. They were oddly downplayed at the end in preference to Adelaide, which leads me to believe there will be even bigger reprecutions to the extra ripples in time those two will leave...

I should hope that it turns out that the Dalek didn't see Adeleide's future - but the future of the Doctor altering Adeleide's future, thus leading to his (the 10th Doctor's) own demise. That would be a good reason for a Dalek to care about sparing a 10 year old. (But how a Dalek comes to be psychic like that, is anyone's guess.) A very underwhelming episode in my view. Not even the least bit frightening or suspenseful. Oh, and while attempting to throw a bone toward the long-time fans with a mention of the "legend of Ice Warriors", the authors manage to sideswipe them upside the head instead by getting their "future" mixed up in the past. Oh well. At least they tried? Even David Tennant and his Doctor stood around for good lengths at a time doing nothing and looking bored. Here's hoping the finale is/was better planned.

I must be watching something else.A horrible episode bar the last 5 mins and the trailer for the next episode with the excellent john sim. Cmon the johnny 5 robot with back to the future esque fire trails was frankly insulting.

Since when has Dalek other than the mad squid-lek from the end of the last series been able to see the future? It totally FFed (FlashForwarded) up there!

Everyone seems to be making a big deal over the dalek sparing adelaide. What if it just didn't think she was important and left? it flew off into the sky, not like it was checking every house. maybe it was looking for someone and she wasnt it. or y'know it just figured she was useless to their cause because they were going to destroy REALITY so why bother to kidnap a 10 year old.

It was a pretty mundane episode, nice to see some actual acting quality from the excellent Linsay Duncan though. The rest of the Mars gang were pretty awful and the much-hyped scares were non-existent, not even slightly eerie. This bit at the end where the poor chap goes mad for a few minutes was crap, why is it getting such praise? It was a crudely written and acted slice of 'OMG, he's lost his morals!!' shite which had no impace whatsoever. Tenant had a lot more gravitas in certain moments of Journey's End. The trailer for the next one doesn't look much cop either; let's all have a guess - his most dangerous universe-threatening scenario yet, with the old gang gathering round to tearfully say goodbye once he's pressed the magic button to solve the problem. I'm not negative, it's glandular.

The Dalek didn't dismiss Adelaide or see her future. It saw only that her death was a fixed point in time. Daleks can see fixed points the same as the Doctor and they wisely steer well clear.
