Why Aren't You Watching Clone Wars?

Bryan Young

Star Wars' animated spin-off, Clone Wars, isn't enjoying the success it should. And Bryan wants to know why...

Published on Dec 9, 2008

I've come here to ask why you're not watching Clone Wars. I know some of you, beyond my comprehension, don't like the prequel trilogy and some of you even resent George Lucas.

I'm here to tell you it's passé to dislike the prequels and the Clone Wars cartoons and the great Bearded One. It's cool again to like Star Wars (though the really cool kids never stopped and never chose between trilogies).

Remember in 1987 and you were out on the playground and none of the other kids understood your deep and gorgeous thirst for Star Wars and somehow thought less of you for it, but you knew you were right?  That's what it's like all over again, except we're all older and inherently more geeky. Next year marks the tenth anniversary of Phantom Menace (a sorely underrated classic, no lie) and once again we have a Star Wars cartoon series to sate that dark thirst for more Star Wars.

But instead of Ewoks or Droids, we have Clone Wars.

And it's something we should be thankful for.

Ever since Luke Skywalker naively asked Obi-Wan, "You fought in the Clone Wars?" most of us have been dying to see that war. "If the war that defeated the Empire was this bad-ass, the war that ended the Jedi must be epic beyond all reason," I used to tell myself.  And now, thanks to George Lucas and his 3D animation team and stable of fantastic writers (including Kevin Rubio and Paul Dini) we finally have an inkling of how epic this war truly was.

I mean, let's be honest, as awesome as it was to see a hundred Jedi flare up their lightsabers around the arena on Geonosis and tear the place apart with the aid of the mysteriously acquired Clone Army, it was simply the spark that started an intense, explosive conflict.  And as breathtaking as it was to watch that final, desperate battle over Coruscant after Grievous' daring maneuver to kidnap the Chancellor, we were watching the close of a war we never saw.

Clone Wars fills in that gap. I'll admit, I wasn't completely sold after the theatrical Clone Wars kick-off. I enjoyed it, but there was something missing that I wasn't able to put my finger on until I had watched the first few episodes of the show. The problem?  It's a Saturday matinee (or Friday night in this case) serial in every sense of the word and it needs those carefully placed pauses and cliffhangers for the structure to work. Scotch taping three episodes together doesn't give it the air it needs to breath.

Now that the show is on the air on a regular basis (9 episodes and counting) we've been shown how the series works. And I'm here to tell you, it's bloody wonderful. In the way the prequels added nuance and meaning to the classic trilogy, the Clone Wars adds it to the prequels in a fashion that has made even prequel-bashers I've talked to admit to liking the prequels more than ever. They still don't like them as much as they should, but it's a start.

My advice to you is to start watching with Friday's episode. It's called "The Lair of Grievous" and it's about Kit Fisto and his former Mon Calamari padawan finding themselves in Grievous' lair and it looks to be dark and thrilling and fantastic. (Here's the trailer.)  I can practically guarantee that, after a few episodes, you'll want to watch the prequels again and when you do, you're in for a pleasant surprise.

I intentionally missed the Jar Jar episode recently aired, but agree that all other eps have been well worth the time. Just one small gripe, at the beginning of every episode a narrator reads what would normally be written on the screen in classic Star Wars fashion. Do the producers want to make sure those viewers not old enough to read don't miss anything? Come on!!

Here here, a truly excellent series which has however spawned my favourite Star Wars joke of the year thanks to Big Bang Theory's Sheldon: 'I prefer to let George Lucas ruin Star Wars for me in the order he determined.' Still people should watch this, well apart from the pitiful Jar Jar Episode. Episode 9 rocked by the way...

The guy that does the voiceover at the start - I'm fairly certain its the same guy that does the voiceover in Starship Troopers. I've seen the first 4 episodes and they're okay. There hasn't been a single 'whoa' moment though, so I'm not in any rush to see any more of them. I really liked the two anime cartoon films of the Clone Wars from a few years ago... they were really good.

It's lazy I know but...I was just going to wait for the DVD. I'm glad you're enjoying it though, and I've heard other people feel the same way. Count me in as someone that grew up with the 'Original Trilogy' but enjoys the prequals every bit as much, so I do want to see this series sometime.

The prequal trilogies get more and more dissapointing the more I watch them. An absolute tragedy.

I saw the Clone Wars movie. Beardo burned me on that one, so as far as I'm concerned this TV show doesn't exist.

"The guy that does the voiceover at the start" is me, Tom Kane, also the voice of YODA and ADMIRAL YULAREN. The oft-disparaged opening Narration came directly from George... He wanted the feel of the excited openings of old Western serials he grew up on. George and Dave had practical reasons as well - remember, there are a lot of kids watching in the distracting environment of a home living room, not a darkened theater, so the beloved yellow "Crawl" would be missed by a lot of viewers just settling in. Love it or hate it, it's MUCH faster at conveying the information, and it just sounds more exciting than "music over nothing" - which is how the "Crawl" would be perceived most of "Generation X-Box". It's sad that so many fans are reluctant to give it a go... It's as close to the feel of "The Old Star Wars" as anything to come along. IMHO. Cheers, -Tom Kane

I'm enjoying The Clone Wars series, as it's on a Friday night block with Batman: The Brave and the Bold, The Secret Saturdays and Ben 10: Alien Force. There is ONE redeeming feature to "Bombad Jedi" in two words: Padme bondage.

Finally, a site where (most) everyone is not bashing everything Star Wars. While I still question why people who hate SW are spending their time on message boards for the very thing they despise (could someone please answer that for me?), it's refreshing to see that there are still those of us out here who realize the prequels are every bit as good as the originals (and yes, I grew up with the originals as well). Long live Star Wars, and thank you George for the Clone Wars!!!

The first two prequels were really boring for many reasons in my opinion; they didn’t have that dirty old look from the originals, everything was shiny, or made with CGI, and it was just a really boring love story. I realize that’s what the kids nowadays are used too, but the original 3 movies were classics in American cinema and these prequels are just silly sides stories. If you like them, good for you, I don’t think you should hate them, but they don’t come close to the great storytelling from the originals. So, don’t act like they are some masterpiece and IM some a-h*le because I hated them. The last one , was all that I ever wanted, how Anakin became Darth Vader. These Clone Wars cartoons, are exactly what you said, the new Ewok Adventures, and that’s why I don’t watch this crap.

They didn't have that 'dirty look'? I think you missed the point...the Republic is meant to be all opulent and craftsmanship and so on. Not a warfare society, unlike the Empire. Notice that in places like Tatooine in the prequels, stuff is still rough and scuffed-up and so on, because it's more about everyday use than artistic design. What I'm saying it, it's a conscious design choice to show the 'degredation' of technology, not some CGI thing. Tom Kane posting here, that's great. Thank you for your voiceovers over the years, sir.

Sorry? It's passe to dislike the Star Wars prequels? That's strange. I thought the scripts and performances were an embarrassment when they came out, and I still do. Has Hayden Christians' performance mysteriously improved? Has Jar-Jar become watchable? No.

Whatching it where? My TV can only get 4 channels!

I'm watching it, but more through habit than anything. The old movies were on tv the other day, and I really enjoyed them. In comparison, the series is bland and cumbersome, IMHO. The artistic style of the characters seems at odds with the 'realism' of the robots and spacecaraft. During scenes involving no living creatures it could almost be part of a 'proper' production...but then someone pops into view and the illusion is burst. I appreciate the target audience is somewhat below my age, but like I said, I still enjoyed the movies - and they certainly work on all ages with great results.

I would watch this if it was available over here. The only way we can get it is through Sky Movies, an add on package (i.e. more money.) A series. On a movie channel. Go figure. The only other way seems to be to download, and that, apart from being not quite legal, takes ages.

It's beyond your comprehensions why most of us don't like the prequel trilogies? Because they're souless, badly acted, badly scripted and have no likable characters. No amount of cartoonish CG don't make up for that

I can't believe nobody here has yet mentioned the animated "Clone Wars" miniseries by Genndy Tartakovsky! If the entire series were re-done by Tartakovsky, THAT would be some excellent viewing...

Have I mentioned how much I love the prequels?
