New Judge Dredd movie in the works

Martin Anderson

After a poor reception in 1995 for Danny Cannon's cinematic take, Judge Dredd is finally out on parole...

Published on Dec 20, 2008

A posting on 2000AD forums today reveals that a new Judge Dredd movie is coming our way.

The post announces that Rebellion and 2000AD are joining forces with DNA films (Sunshine, 28 Weeks Later) to bring 2000AD's most esteemed character to the screen a second time.

The 1995 Sylvester Stallone production tanked in an atmosphere of critical ferocity and box-office disinterest, but it seems that the current mania for comic adaptations has proven irresitible.

CEO and Creative Director Jason Kingsley said, ‘We can’t give away too many details at this point, but we’re looking forward to working with DNA Films to bring Judge Dredd back to the big screen.’

Since DNA's two most successful films have starred Cillian Murphy, will he be the one to say 'I am the law'? Let the casting furore commence...

Dare I suggest that there is only one serious contender around today with adequate chin for the role...?

Cillian Murphy is a shoe-in for Judge Death, surely?

All a Dredd movie needs is a lead with little enough ego to know the helmet has to stay ON.

Would Perlman in every role be too much to ask? I think not...

judge Dredd was ahead of its time in some respects, movie goers were not familiar with comic book adaptation so the decision to use a box office draw like Stallone was a natural. Both as JD he was was pretty rough, add in a 'funny' side kick, dodgy special effects and gawd help us - a love interest and that pretty much borked the movie for me. When Stallone walked into the block war put his hands on his hips and shouted "I am the law!" I heard one member of the audience shout back "Oh be nice!" Fingers crossed for the new version with more of a connection to Mega City. We can but hope...

I'll be awaiting this with nervous anticipation. For me there's only one storyline they can go with- Judge Death and his gang. Personally, I can't think of any comic company I'd like to see more films from than 2000AD- Nemesis, Rogue Trooper, Judge Dredd, Slaine. A proper adaptation of one of those will have me filling my geek shorts in no time. Unless they cast Sly.

they should also re-release the old film but CGI the helmet on through out, i hated wen i saw it as i was so annoyed about the helmet. Watching it back though it has quite a good story and the Dredd extras(abc warrior, angels etc)

Yeh I would love to see a Rogue Trooper movie, it would be a winner for sure if done right, blue skinned guy with talking backpack helmet and Rifle, whats not to love! I grew up reading 2000AD and if they screw this version of Dredd up I'll be very disappointed. The first movie wasn't too bad until Sly took of his helmet and it degenerated into stupidity with Rob Schnieder. 2000AD had such a great wealth of Characters and stories , I'm surprised that more movies haven't been made from this Comic. Lets hope they do and do it properly, as so many Hollywood movies rip the heart out things.
