Benedict Wong’s Star Is Rising In The Marvel Universe

By Chris Longo

Here’s why Benedict Wong’s appearance in Shang-Chi could be the beginning of a larger role in the MCU.

British actor Benedict Wong has been a recurring player in the MCU since he first appeared as “Wong” in Doctor Strange.

The keeper of ancient books and master of the mythic arts, Wong possesses the power of a sorcerer and always has a quippy one-liner on screen.

In the comics, Wong has long been a loyal disciple to Doctor Strange.

Both Wong and Stephen Strange made their first Marvel Comics appearances in Strange Tales #110 in April 1963.

In the MCU, Wong has mostly been a supporting player and ally of The Avengers...

With memorable moments and fights in Infinity War and an epic entrance in the final battle with Thanos in Endgame.

The 50-year-old actor will get a chance to flesh out the character in three major upcoming MCU films.

Wong is set to appear in Shang-Chi, as seen in the trailers, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness.

On the animated side of the MCU, Benedict Wong also returns to voice Wong in an episode of Disney+’s What If... in a trippy Doctor Strange story.

Will Wong go from sidekick to centerpiece in Phase 4?

All signs point to “yes” as Marvel continues to explore both the mystical elements of its universe and multiverse.
