Doctor Who series 5 episode 7: Amy’s Choice review

Simon Brew

The latest episode of Doctor Who, Amy's Choice, is likey to divide opinions really quite strongly. We, sadly, weren't so keen on this one...

PLEASE NOTE: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS. OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEW IS HERE.

Considering the strong run that Doctor Who has been enjoying this year, it was somewhat inevitable that at some point, the brakes had to be slammed on.

So it proved with the generally underwhelming Amy’s Choice, for this writer’s money, the weakest instalment of the series to date. What’s particularly disappointing is that the ingredients were solidly in place here for something better. The problem was that the end result - if you'll forgive the cliche - was less than the sum of its collected parts.

In the first third, Amy’s Choice had the feel of being the low budget episode of the series (not necessarily a bad thing), given that it looked like it was going to be the Doctor versus a bunch of old people (who turned out to be a surprisingly good foe, before they got turned into yet another batch of aliens with a chip on their shoulder).

As the episode progressed, though, that feeling was dispelled, as gradually, more and more effects money made its way to the screen. Some of this work wasn’t too impressive – the creatures coming out of people’s mouths, for instance – but the sequences where the Tardis was gradually freezing were far more impressive. And by the end, it was clear that the low budget episode this was not.

What it turned out to be was an attempt to put together a mind-bending head scratcher, an episode where you’re unsure throughout what is reality and what isn’t. And the catalyst for that is the choice that Amy Pond ultimately has to make.

When we join Amy and Rory, they’re in Upper Ledworth, five years since they’ve last seen the Doctor, and with Amy heavily pregnant. Cue the materialisation of the Tardis, and the Doctor duly arrives to discover that Upper Ledworth is a very quiet place. Too quiet a place, as it turns out, save for the sound of birds that soon start following the Doctor around. It’s thus time to try and get to the bottom of the mystery, because quiet places generally equal deep trouble.

However, before they get a chance to consider this, the Doctor, Rory and Amy promptly fall asleep, and wake up in the Tardis. A bit of dialogue later and we work out that they’ve all had the same ‘dream’, and none of them have been on the pop either.

But is it a dream? Or is what’s going on in the Tardis the dream?

That’s the conundrum posed by Toby Jones as The Dream Lord, a potentially intriguing character who appears inside the Tardis, and knows the Doctor of old. He's full of mystery, is clearly in control, and for once, knows a lot more than the Doctor seems to.

And yet, sadly, in spite of the clear potential here, the character of the Dream Lord never particularly intrigues enough to have us requesting a return for him in the future. We’ve had the immense pleasure of seeing Toby Jones on stage, and he’s genuinely an outstanding actor. But here, he gets a role that never quite falls the right side of slightly annoying (not helped by the overuse of him cutting in and out of scenes in different places). Certainly the script does him few favours, and by second half of the episode, we felt that the Dream Lord seemed to have outlived his welcome, if not his purpose.

That said, he does seem to hold the key to what’s happening, and he basically explains the rules of the game. One world that we’re seeing is a dream, and if you die in it, then you’re still alive. One world, however, is reality, and if you buy it there, it’s game over. The job? To work out which is a dream, and which real.

The problem is that there’s never really any doubt that the village sequences aren't reality, and as the episode zips between the two, we have to spend more time in Upper Ledworth, when it’s the story of the Tardis crashing towards a cold star that feels slightly more interesting (albeit admittedly probably not enough to power an episode in its own right).

The core job of the episode ultimately feels like it’s there to bring Rory and Amy back together, which it does via a contrivance where Amy proves that she’ll die for Rory (thus making her choice, and presumably stopping her lurching at the Doctor in the future). Rory, bless him, is even willing to cut off his ponytail to get into the spirit of things.

But it can’t just have been us thinking it would have been far bolder to actually have the Upper Ledworth world be true? Appreciating that it’s an unlikely move for a show that goes out on a Saturday teatime, it would nonetheless have ensured that Amy’s Choice would be talked about and celebrated for some time, as opposed to its more likely life being buried at the back of a box set.

As it was, the episode felt like it cheated a bit, given that both worlds apparently happened to be dreams, caused by, er, psychic pollen that was lying in the Tardis’ time mechanics (sabotage, perhaps?). Thus, the Dream Lord, we’re told, is actually the Doctor. Which explains why the two characters knew each other so well.

Or is he? Is there more to him than that? We always think back to something like The Lazarus Experiment with something like this, where an episode that seemingly was unrelated to others suddenly had a big part to play in the narrative of the series. It'd be lovely if that could happen here.

Thus, was that an ongoing thread element when we got the reflection of the Dream Lord in the Tardis console at end of the episode? Possibly. For, that aside, we certainly didn't have any cracks or silences this time round, and aside from that reflection moment, this was every bit an unspectacular middle of the series instalment.

All considered, Amy’s Choice wasn’t a terrible piece of television, but it’s the first episode of this particular run that left us underwhelmed. And it doesn’t help, of course, that the standard had been so high to this point (yup, we still like Victory Of The Daleks).

The messing around with our heads didn’t really work for us, and Simon Nye’s script – surprising, given his pedigree – came across as really quite dry. It had its moments, such as the “what is the point of you” line, for instance. More moments like that would have helped. Amy's "can we not do the running thing" also felt like a bit of a nod to old Who again, although it's likely to be more with the fact that she was expecting at that point of the episode.

In short, though, this was script that really could have used a few more sparks (and a bit less Dream Lord).

Sadly, it didn’t really get them. So, while it brought Rory and Amy back together, and while it once again showed that Matt Smith is already utterly owning the title role, this isn’t an episode we can see ourselves returning to many times again in the future.

That said, we can see it being an especially divisive one, with many people far keener on it than us. Let the debate on that begin below in the comments...

I was quite disapointed by this episode, the idea of it was great but the 'monsters' who enveloped the old people were very, very naff. It was the same with Torchwood: Children of Earth, great idea, but then with a poor CGI alien.

I did actually enjoy this episode, I thought it was better than the Dalek episode, sure you always knew that the Ledworth dream wasn't the real world but I thought it was a good overall episode.

Who gives a stuff if the aliens inside the old people didn't look amazingly convincing? The episode wasn't really about them anyway. It was an episode of character development, not an episode of big nasty monster threats. I personally really enjoyed it.

Really, really enjoyed it. Toby Jones was fantastic and I bet it had kids scared of their grandparents! Far, far better than 'Victory of the Daleks' (which could've been and AMAZING two-parter). Strange review by DoG- I normally agree with you!

I thought it was a brilliant episode, terrifying until the end. It makes sense for the Dream Lord to be the Doctor and Toby Jones was great in his performance, albeit slightly annoying, but a real trickster. But is this is what the Doctor thinks of himself? Maybe the Dream Lord has awoken and he's simmering underneath the surface of the Doctor's psyche, waiting to get out. It would've indeed been a bold move to make the Leadworth reality the real deal, but then we would've had pregnant Amy and dead Rory and that's not exactly exciting. There were one or two lines in this that I really laughed out loud, especially the Peruvian poncho one. Maybe in a rewatch this episode won't be as scary, but it would benefit seeing another side of the Doctor's own darker side (someone who challenges him, does exactly what the Doctor expects of him; when he mentioned splitting them apart the DL did just that and he knows a lot about the Doctor, well because he is. Maybe the Doctor is questioning himself, his companions, his lifestyle, his wackiness, his old age and the name thing he was probably still thinking about ever since he found out River knew his name. It's a secret he never told anyone, but why her? Of course, since it already happened is has to happen again. It would be interesting if they will continue down this darker Doctor persona 'the Dream Lord' who hates himself for being who he is; someone who cannot appreciate birdsong or the quiet, slow life. Rory was excellent in this. I'm quite liking him. The Dream Lord could come back, but I hope he doesn't reappear again as this First Evil persona unable to touch anything, because that's now been done. "Bow ties are cool." The frozen TARDIS set looked amazing. Great episode. Thrilling, much better than 'Vampires' five times better as 'Daleks'.

Personally, and this is coming from someone who certainly enjoys Dr. Who but would never count himself a diehard fan, I really rather enjoyed this episode and found it far superior to last week's silly encounter with the fish/alien hybrids ... top of the list for me would have to be Toby Jones who was fantastic as The Dream Lord and proved that if the actor is good then any amount of CGI FX can never compensate ... enjoyed the echoes of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" though the CGI work on the creatures was admittedly very poor ... but giving more time and focus to Amy who is, by far, one of the most interesting, intelligent and damn sexy assistants of late was a good decision ... the scene where she pretended to be giving birth and subsequently left The Doctor and Rory as white as a sheet only went to show how single minded, smart, strong and cunning she really is ... so, certainly no masterpiece by a long stretch but one of the more memorable episodes of late ... as for next week, it all looks rather run of the mill and uninspiring once again ..

The Dream Lord/Doctor relationship was interesting, hope there is more of that to come (shades of The Valeyard?) The rest of the episode was pure 'meh' The pollen explanation was incredibly cheap.

pretty much agreed about this episode, wasn't THAT bad, but not up to the high standard we've had so far, and kinda a copout ending. I am wondering though if the 'psychic dust' is somehow related to the cracks...

Maybe, *as* the Dream Lord, the Doctor's feelings as being a perverted old man trying to come on to a young girl manifested itself especially when he dresses up as a Spanish dancer! But he does genuinely care and wants to help her sort her life out. You could say this episode had two Doctors! Really interesting though, does the Doctor hate himself so much? "there's only one man who hates me that much." he says to the Dream Lord. I was picturing the Master implanting a virus in the TARDIS or something, but it's actually the Doctor himself. Well, he *is* always running away from everything, even himself, his guilt, his old age. Maybe at the end of this series the Doctor will be forced to grow up...

Another great episode. Can't say that I agree with the negativity of the reviewer here. The character of The Dream Lord was interesting and fun, hoping we get to see some more of him in the future. Not going to comment on the effects as I've thought that so far the series has looked excellent. Besides Dr Who has always been about more than the effects for me. So, all in all another top excellent in what has been a fantastic fifth series so far. The only downer being the design of the new Daleks. Next weeks episode looks like another cracker too. Kudos to the production team, it just gets better and better.

Loved it. Best of the series so far in my estimation, as a piece of drama rather than as a Doctor Who episode- to me the latter is something more monster-friendly, but this was great in the same way Midnight was. And like Midnight, it's a clever circumvention of what's obviously the cheap episode of the series. Oh, and the excellent Toby Jones is the Valeyard. That's my story and I'm sticking to it until told otherwise- he'll be back, I bet. 5/5

Figured this might be about the most divisive episode of the series to date :-) Watched it twice, and still didn't really warm to it. Not terrible, didn't hate it, just lots of ideas that never gelled for me. Appreciate I'm in the minority on this one! (one side note: just because the FX are mentioned from time to time, that's not the reason I watch the show, nor anything that's ever been particularly important to me).

What was the significance of all that YELLOW? Some very nice throw-away lines, a plus of the whole series so far, some old lady violence. Zombie-lite villains and all the drama points in the right place. But Amy Pond was an annoying bitch throughout, I'm really starting to get a Langford vibe off her. Rory is shaping up to be a better, certainly smarter, companion than many others and Matt Smith is growing on me like a weird alien space fungus good work sir. But please take some risks and kill someone important and make it stick.

Have to say for the first time this series Den of Geek I have to say I DISAGREE. Thought this was a brilliant small, gently paced (slightly old Who) type episode. Loved the dream Lord character, am hoping theres more to him than was said at the end. With the reflection at the very end maybe there is. I loved that they spent time on the two companions, and developed them. I thought this was a great way of slowing down the quick pace of the series that we've had in the last few episodes. Am really looking forward to the return of the underground menace next week, I along with other old who fans know who they are but for the sake of spoilers I won't say who (hopefully those stupid voices will have been slightly modified).

Also thought there were some really funny moments. Amy pretending to give birth - Doctor: "You're a doctor Rory help her!" Rory: "No YOU'RE the Doctor!" Doctor: "It's OK Amy, we're doctors!"

Re: Doctor Who series 5 episode 7: Amy’s Choice review
Posted By Omniaural 1 May 15, 2010 06:56:33 PM

I kind of agree with the review in that it was an episode that had a lot of potential but didn't quite shine as it could have. Partly that was to do with the two realities on offer. If there had been a second reality, possibly also based in leadworth, with Amy settled down with the Doctor or something and not Tardis based then it could have kept us guessing. I did see the bit about them both being dreams coming as I felt that a dream lord would only have power/presence in slumberland. A good idea that I've seen done better. I agree with you guys who have already mentioned it too, that this would be cool if we're getting the valeyard seeded for a future storyline. Would the BBC risk having a series of evil Dr Who? Maybe it would work as a series finale which leaves a long enough gap somewhere for past/future valeyard stories to be woven in but then resolves it by the end of the story. Not the best episode this series but still better than the worst of previous seasons.

I enjoyed The Dream Lord. It would have been better without the monsters in the mouths of the old people. I'm sure there are other ways to make people look sinister without CGI. I you look at the aliens in the 60s show The Invaders, they looked creepy by just having a rigid finger! Next week's episode looks a bit Quatermasseque.

I thought this was a good solid episode. The idea was good and kept me guessing right until the end. It did fizzle out at the conclusion, but it was suitably creepy and well executed instalment. The aliens inside the old people was the weakest aspect, and may well have worked better if they had been zombies or something similar. Otherwise very enjoyable.

I am another who completely disagrees with the DoG reviewer, but then again he did like Victory of the Daleks so his taste was already in doubt! A very good change of pace and a very clever self-contained episode. The acting was up a notch, the script was very clever and really added flesh to Amy, Rory and The Doctor's characters. I do agree that the ending was a bit of a cop out, but overall very good.

Have to disagree with Den of Geek. It didn't seem to me to be all about bringing Amy and her man together. Lovely episode. Something a bit different (compared to the rest of the new series that is). Toby Jones was great. Troughton meets new Doctor Who head on. Excellent. Overall this is my favourite Doctor Who series. Hopefully all future series will be as varied.

Re: Doctor Who series 5 episode 7: Amy’s Choice review
Posted By Viridis 1 May 15, 2010 09:08:41 PM

I'm glad the aliens in the old people weren't explained too much. It would've detracted from the episode and complicated something that ultimately went nowhere. But as a simple and original creepy threat they were effective to a point. What really confused me was all those people the Doctor saved in his bus, further tricking us into believing that this reality was the 'real' one by emphasizing its real world scale. A very clever episode indeed.

I enjoyed the episode, certainly moreso than the Dalek and Vampire ones. The actual resolution was the only real downer, whereas the other stories this season have involved the viewer in an oppertunity to 'work it out' there was no way this week...given the mystery nature of the concept that was a bit of a let down.

Hey, I thought it was a good episode. The village scenario didn't convince because making a companion pregnant and 5 years old seems too big to happen off-screen, but I was still interested in where it was going and I DID think Toby Jones was amusing and menacing in turn. This was certainly a step above both Beast & Victory this year, no 'blip' here for me (since it is only opinions after all...)

I meant '5 year ON', not a five-year old pregnant companion... :P

Hmmm... bit of a curate's egg but better than I expected. So the Dream Lord could be the Valeyard? The Doctor's subconcious may not like himself very much but he wasn't malevolent enough to be the Valeyard (in waiting)and anyway that presupposes the series won't find a way of skirting the prosaic Robert Holmes plot device that "Timelords can only regenerate twelve times". If Toby Jones becomes the next Doctor I think there may be more of an argument, then one would half expect Michael Jayston to turn up for the final incarnation...For me he was more reminiscent of the Master of The Land of Fiction in The Mind Robber. If one accepts the theory that the whole Troughton tale could be the Doctor's dream, then the parallels are more obvious. The Doctor manipulating events and companions was also explored during Sylvester McCoy's time. Arthur Darvill is a great find. Really liking the boy/girl companion duo. A curious reversal of the relationship Tegan and Turlough had perhaps.

When will the pathetic writers of the human race get it into there weak little minds that you can actually have a successful romantic realationship with the main characters of a story? This episode was a total cop-out. I was rather enjoying this new Doctor Who. I was enjoying the relationship growing between the Doctor and Amy. I thought how nice that the writers might actually go someplace new with the series. Then... WHAM! Right back to the same tired old shit...

Re: Doctor Who series 5 episode 7: Amy’s Choice review
Posted By Zephos 1 May 16, 2010 04:02:33 AM

Completely disagree Urthwise, and I'm sure a lot of people are the same. No-one wants to watch the Doctor fall in love again because, let's face it, it'd be boring. Particularly if it was a successful relationship. Where's the drama? the tension? We all know it wouldn't last because we saw it before with Rose, why retread? How would that be somewhere new? Having the companion NOT involved or have feelings for the Doctor would be a refreshing change. In other news, I'm also firmly in the camp who enjoyed this episode. It was well written and directed, with a lot of tense moments and even more surprisingly some poignant character moments. In fact, this furthered all three characters more than most of the episodes this season so far. The biggest acclaim from me is the true identity of the Dream Lord. Far, far better than just pulling out a nameless villain that the Doctor knows but we don't (or worse still, some incarnation of the Master which I was actually concerned would be the case). This line says it all: "there's only one person in the universe who hates me as much as you". That is huge!

From last week’s trailer I wasn’t really looking forward to this episode, but I found myself pleasantly surprised. It reminded me of some of Farscape’s quirkier episodes, where it wasn’t about an all action plot, but instead it was about the characters. I’m really warming Matt Smith as the Doctor, and Amy is an awesome assistant, there’s a real chemistry between the two leads. Even Rory came off as a slightly better character in this, although he still seems fairly weak overall. Generally the whole show has a much more well rounded feel now that Russell T Davies is gone. Long may it continue.

Re: Doctor Who series 5 episode 7: Amy’s Choice review
Posted By Morbius 1 May 16, 2010 06:33:58 AM

I'm afraid I found it rather boring. And overly comedic to the point I couldn't care about the characters as real people. But still the strongest episode of the season, unfortunately. Good point about the world with Amy pregnant being obviously fake. That took away some potential guessing and suspense. And of course the cold star made me think that possibly both worlds were fake, which turned out to be true. I think I'd have preferred it if both worlds seemed real. Then I'd have been guessing along with the characters. But I guess that would have conflicted with the comedic mission of Doctor Who this season; showing Amy staggering around pregnant, Rory's ponytail, the old people lurching around--comedy is the driving point now, and other considerations are secondary.

Great episode, I thought the dream lord was fantastically eerie in this episode. There was comedy here and there. Mainly the comedic violence as the old people get smacked about, it was quite funny. Arthur Darvill impressed me again, I hope he stays in the Tardis longer. Being Dutch, I absolutely cannot wait for the episode Vincent and the Doctor!

"it’s the first episode of this particular run that left us underwhelmed" Us? There is more than one writer at DoG who thought this was poor? Well, everyone is of course entitled to their opinion and my opinion is that this was on of the most enjoyable Who episodes I can remember. It pulled of the neat trick of being tense and funny. The twist of the Dream Lord being a manifestation of the Doctor's somewhat self-loathing dark persona was an interesting one. I know I said that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but Victory of the Daleks WAS crap - no argument. End of!

What's with the several mentions in recent episodes, this one included, of the Doctor's 'dalliance', shall we say, with Elizabeth I? The remarks always seem at odds with the Doctor's character and jar for this viewer. And let's wait for the Daily Mail's complaints about Rory knocking down the old woman, even if she was a deadly alien.

alas I disagree with the DOG review, first time ever! Thought this was a well paced and intriguing episode that will surely fit into the overall series arc. I really liked the dreamlord and am looking forward to finding out who he actually is (freaky reflection in the console at the end).

This episode was...meh.. Ok in places but as others have said, both places weren't convincing enough to be reality.

It was a deeply flawed episode but at the same time it was quite special. Never since the shows revival has the dark elements of the Doctor's character been explored in such depth. The psychic pollen explanation was surely a white lie from Matt Smith's doctor (who gave his best performance ever in the role.) It's ambiguity became apparent when the Dream Lord's reflection appeared. I presume the character had experienced a full-on psychotic episode, in which he played out the guilt accumulated from his past journey's with female companions. It was a wonderfully dark twist and although the episode had unstable execution it was gorgeously photographed and wonderfully acted. Even Gillian gave some emotion during the scene of Rory's death. An intriguing episode without a shadow of a doubt and you just know the daily mail are have a field day with 'the avocation of AS behaviour toward the elderly'. Old woman pushed off a roof! Oh we laaaav it.

"The weakest instalment of the series to date"? Whooot? Did we watch the same episode? Ok, I was a wee bit disappointed because it wasn't as good as "Blink". Nevertheless I still find that this was one of the most intruiging episodes of the new Who. This is what the "evil" part of the Doctor looks like? Never thought that the almighty Doctor had such an awful lot of self-doubts. Very good idea indeed!

So much better than last week, BUT I still say it's not a patch on the previous 4 seasons. And please can Amy Pond die before the end of the run - she's really pissing me off!!

Will anyone still read this comment? I'm not too late, am I? :D I was a bit worried about this one because you were, Geeks of Den, but I needn't have. Instead, I add my voice to the chorus of people saying this is the first time I've disagreed with your reviews of this new series. (And yes, that means I liked the Dalek episode - no matter what anyone else says, those new Daleks are scary! They're huge! Freaking TANKS!) Anyway, I liked this one. I did seriously consider the possibility that the Leadworth reality could be the real one - it wouldn't be the first time the Doctor's timeskipped on Amy. It would have been a bold move, but I wouldn't have put it past them. And there were some brilliant scenes in it, both funny and sad. I laughed my head off when Amy terrified the Doctor by pretending to have her baby, just in revenge for calling her town boring! And on the other end, when Rory died and Amy told the Doctor "then what is the point of you?" my heart broke for the both of them. And then there was "No one in the universe hates me as much as you do." And then it turned out to be a reflection the Doctor himself... It surprised me, and yet I wasn't surprised. The only thing I'm a bit miffed at is how they made light of that revelation, but then again, that's just how the Doctor handles those things. In conclusion, if I didn't already love Matt as the Doctor, I certainly would now.

Ok, decided to finally register just so i could comment this time. First of all, you are pulling our legs right? You really thought so little of the episode? The episode was fantastic as has been described in previous comments. I wonder if this wasn't just a sly attempt (and a successful one)to get some higher quality comments out of your readers. So come on, the jig is up! Tell us what you REALLY thought of the episode. Because this is the only review of the new series so far that just doesn't seem in place. Second, since this is my first time commenting, I just want to say a couple things that have been on my mind. Steven Moffet is doing an excellent job. He has rescued Doctor Who in my opinion. Unlike RTD's tenure in charge, Doctor Who now feels, in alot of ways like the Doctor Who of old, but with higher production values. Much of the silliness (read: stupidness) is gone such as baffling "the god in the machine" endings of most episodes. The stories have a much more intelligent feel to them, with endings that make sense because they were foreshadowed ealier in the story. That Matt Smith/Troughton comparison is apt and I'm loving that. Amy is the best companion in the new series so far. (Please, God, may we never have another Rose) Finally: If all the Time Lords are dead does this include Romana and the Doctor's Granddaughter Susan. That's a real heart breaker. However there is always the future for surprises and I feel that Steven Moffat could be the one to bring them.

A great episode! The one and only downturn was the revelation of it all being brought on by a few dream pellets stuck in bits of the TARDIS. That was just a bit too convenient. The Dream Lord was a fantastic character, and being that he's the dark nature of the Doctor, I certainly hope to see him return - especially if that dark side one day decides to screw around with the Doctor's past, say oh, about 5 lifetimes back! I still don't buy Amy's choice being Rory. The guy is dull as a new-style dandy dalek. (So that let's you know what I thought of "Victory of".) Amy's true choice between Rory and the Doctor should have been C.) Neither. (As was the answer to which of the two world's were the real world. Village or Icy TARDIS. C.) Neither.

Have to disagree with the review as well apart from the opening episode this was my favourite ep of the series so far. I even warmed to amy a little bit more i have to confess that I can't usually stand her fine her opinionated and annoying. Loved matt smith (though have in every ep so far) and rory too.

i totally agree this episode sucked so bad worst one out of the new series although the only ones ive liked so far was the 2 parter all the other episodes kinda flop at the end this one i was thinking would be good well more hoping really... but it just lacked any interesting parts.. yea theres a few funny lines here and there but i got bored pretty quickly on this one i think matt smith is doing a good job as the doctor though and amy is a good character rory is boring and rather pointless i find so far my opinion of this series is that its a major failure... lets hope the rest of the season is good... though im in doubt of it..

Though I didn't actually hate this episode, I found it a bit of a let down. The "twist" was lazy and telegraphed and I really don't like the "Doctor-Amy-Rory" dynamic. One of the interesting things about Doctor Who since as far back as Jon Pertwee, has been the underlying sexual tension between the Doctor and his female companions. Rory is a wet-end and no amount of heroics is going to change that ( which I presume is the eventual end to which Stephen Moffat is heading with this character); and I can't imagine a strong personality like Amy being attracted to that, maybe at first, but then the contempt would begin to set in and...well...yadda yadda yadda. Anyway...

Joining the chorus of those who think this was a first-rate episode--sorry, DoG. I think it did a lot to develop the doctor's character, actually--I do think he's quite smitten with Amy, but his quandary is his history of messing up people's lives (as the DreamLord nicely puts it); here he's snatched this young woman away the night before her wedding--what kind of a monster does that? He has to put his own desires in the background out of concern for the well-being of Amy and...Rory (can't believe she's in love with him, but that's another story). A tragic dilemma for the doc. And btw, Matt Smith IS the doctor--fantastic. Not meant to take anything away from DT, whom I loved; but Smith is terrific.

Here's a random question... Do they keep referring to the Doctor's tryst with Elizabeth I, or is that something we might have to remember later...? You never know with this stuff.

Re: Doctor Who series 5 episode 7: Amy’s Choice review

The Dream Lord could have been scarier, Rory's dream more believable, the Doctor's less so, and the explanation less of a throw-away. Other than that, top-notch. Some of the latest eps feel a bit like they're just throwing more and more at the doctor, running on tangents. This was more focused.

Aside from the weak ending - or was it a weak ending - this was another solid episode in the canon. I was quite enjoying the Amy/Dr dynamic, so the arrival of Rory has weakened the show for me, but I am assuming that this is all going somewhere. All the jealous boyfriend stuff last week left me a bit cold and I think it would have been better to explore the relationship between the doctor and Ms Pond for a few more episode before Rory's arrival. Still got "Over the Rainbow" beat by a country mile though! :-)

PLEASE... never let Simon Nye write another episode. This wasn't even good enough to be called mid-season filler. Terrible plot and even worse ending. I agree with the review. Where this season has fallen down is in the CGI department. To blame budget cuts is all well and good but the quality is pathetic. If its going to look rubbish - DON'T DO IT! I'd rather go back to monsters made out of toilet role tubes and bits of carpet.

Actually, thinking about it, Steven Moffet seems to be determined to ruin the excellent work done by RTD. While I wasn't a massive fan of everything RTD produced, there was a great degree of quality control. SM has invited some really weak writers along so far, come-up with weak characters that are difficult to connect with, and turned the Daleks into overweight dayglo wheeliebins. I don't mind tweaks to the RTD template and I appreciate that SM needs to put his own mark on the show but there's been some really poor choices so far this series.

I thought this was a very good character driven episode. I'm thankful it looks to have killed off Amy's interest in the Doctor. I agree that it seemed obvious that the village story wasn't real, but I still enjoyed the feel of the episode and the uncertaintly. I have to say, I'm losing faith in the DoG reviews for this program. To slate this yet praise Victory of the Daleks is ridiculous in my opinion. VotD is far and away the worst episode of this series, and probably on of the worst of new Who. At least the Absorbaloth episode had the excuse that it was thought up by a 12 year old kid! The only issue I had was the psychic pollen which I thought was a bit weak.

Oh come on… are evil OAPs the best that the writer could come up with? LAME! Falling asleep every 10 minutes - LAME! And then to wake-up, do a Bobby Ewing and blame it all on some little pills - LAME! Worst episode ever in the last 5 series without a shadow of a doubt. Lazy, lack of a fertile imagination and just plain awful. Men Behaving badly sucked too.

Amazing. Complete disagreement here. I am begining to wonder if we watched the same episode. Very strong story, great characters, and some very tense moments. A difficult dilemma and a very creepy resolution to Amy's love triangle. The Doctor has completly lost the plot and in my book that is actually a good thing. After all those years of time travelling, it must have some impact. How you can call this episode the weakest when compared to Fish Vampires and Power Ranger Darleks puzzles me.

for all the people complaining about the 'Old People,' its all a metaphor for the Doctors life they are very old and 'feed' off the young to stay vibrant and alive... sound like anyone????? I thought that if you look past the surface, this episode was very deep and clever.

Is it just me, or is "nine months pregnant woman chooses to (poetentially) commit suicide rather than live without her man" actually really disturbing and not, in fact, the grand romantic gesture the script seemed to want us to think it was?

Re: Doctor Who series 5 episode 7: Amy’s Choice review

Come to think of it, the pregnancy was completely played up for laughs... not for one moment did it seem like anybody was actually emotionally invested in it in any real sort of way. Not Amy, not Rory, not the Doctor. If the script seemed cognizant of this and played it up as a symptom of Amy being really screwed up in the head (as, indeed, she is, full of abandonment issues as spelled out in "The Eleventh Hour" and still not satisfyingly explored since then), it would have strengthened the episode.

Posted By Hayzee 1 May 18, 2010 08:01:01 PM

I must say that I found this episode by far the most intriguing of the series so far (and that includes the ongong and quite delicious River Song plotline.) Right from the start, this series has crackled along and despite my great admiration for everything that RTD brought to the show, I can't help feeling that the new Doctor has truly 'grown up'. The Moff has brought some maturity to the show in the form of beautifully crafted stories, deeper, darker dialogue, and plenty of easter eggs for longstanding fans. At the surface there are the same monster threats, cliffhanger moments and comic asides - more than enough to keep the the kids entranced. But just under the surface, there is much afoot. No disrespect to Simon Nye for what I think is an excellent story with 'Amys Choice', but the hand of the Mighty Moff is surely at work here too. Take a few carefully placed lines for example: The Doctor: "Are we flashing forwards or backwards?" or the Dream Lord: "I've always been able to see right through you Doctor." Throwaway dialogue or hidden truths? Intriguing, don't you think? Perhaps Moffat's failing here is to have taken the show just a little TOO seriously. The 'psychic pollen' explanation is one such example. Did the writers expect us all to 'get' that little white lie. It seems many haven't. Similarly the birdsong being the link (maybe the trigger) between dream states? It's not the first time we've heard birdsong in this series and I can see (hear?) that playing a role in future epsiodes. I have a sneaky feeling seeds are being planted all over the place which will have us all looking back and slappping our foreheads in a few week's time. So is the DL an alter-ego of the Doctor, or a genuine foe? Plenty of clues here, from his initial Rory put- down as the gooseberry and the (self?) deprecating comments about the Doctor's hairdo and fashion sense, through to his taunting of Amy "I know where your heart lies." If this is the Doc's inner demons, then he clearly has a lot of angst to deal with, and if it's the Valeyard or some other alien nasty, he's going to be a major pain in the anus, for sure. I also found the comedy in this episode very satisfying. Rory is turning out to be an absolute jewel. The competitive bickering and flashes of jealously are a joy to watch and Arthur Darvill's comic timing is impeccable. But no headline billing yet. Personally if I were showrunner I gave the lad a permanent seat in the Tardis, but I fear the boy will be leaving us soon. On the basis of this episode I wonder how that will be achieved? I sense Amy is still uncertain about her 'choices'. Perhaps young Rory will discover Pond and The Doc 'in flagrante' and storm off in disgust. Now wouldn't that be deliciously naughty! And Matt Smith delivers his best line so far in the series with "...there's something that doesn't make sense. Let's go and poke it with a stick." I can't think of a more apt and concise description for what Doctor Who is all about! Perhaps Moffat is suggesting we do just that with this riveting series. And so on to next week. Are you as convinced as I am that Miss Pond is going to be behind that mask?

Re: Doctor Who series 5 episode 7: Amy’s Choice review
Posted By Josette 1 May 22, 2010 10:39:14 AM

Agree that the pregnancy was rather thrown away - given the title (a nod to "Sophie's Choice"?), I assumed that Amy realising she would have to choose to sacrifice her unborn child would be a pivotal part of the plot, but it just got forgotten. I'm not convinced about Rory at all - I find him even more irritating than I initially did Mickey, and the whole triangle thing seems to me like a bit of a rehash of Doctor-Rose-Mickey. That said, although not one of the strongest episodes, I thought Matt Smith put in his best performance yet (loved "You've swallowed a planet") - even though I'm still mourning DT, I felt this was the point that MS really made the role his own.

Posted By junegrape 1 June 6, 2010 06:17:12 AM

Color me gobsmacked that it took this episode to make the reviewer feel "underwhelmed." What! What! "Vampires in Venice" - worst episode ever. Now that that's out of my system, I've been having an ongoing case of "meh" with series 5, but I really liked this one. It certainly was not without its problems in my view - the "all-elderly-people-are-creepy" meme, the alien-eye-in-the-mouth thing - which is getting old -- I swear I was prepared to change the channel if those fangs that seem appear in every episode of this series appeared yet again. But what won me over was the premise of not knowing which was the real reality - I've certainly awakened from vivid dreams that seemed real - and the moments where Amy clearly realizes she loves Rory - it was so nice to see Karen Gillan given something else to do besides coming off as simply precocious/annoying/precocious/annoying. (Yes, I know she's generally considered the best assistant since sliced bread). Since Moffat's taken over, though, in order to get through an episode, I've really had to come to terms with *his* treatment of humanity - a pregnant woman prepared to commit suicide? Really? In a show that's partly aimed at kids? Also with this episode, Matt Smith's Doctor has just about won me over - I think he's doing a brilliant job with the stuff he's being handed.

I really enjoyed this episode, it had a kind of Twilight zone feel to it. Rory really shined in this episode, Amy and the Doctor were awesome as always. The only thing I did not like was that I instantly knew that both scenarios were imagined, which sort of killed the tension. Overall an interesting episode that really showed Amy`s devotion to Rory and the Doctor`s trust in her. I have watched it multiple times and found it more enjoyable on the second viewing.
